Unplayable, advice

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:40 am

OK a little background 1st. I bought FNV about a week after it was released. System specs at that time:
CPU- AMD 555 Black Edition dual core unlocked to stable quad core
Mobo- ASUS M4A88TD-M
PSU- Kingwin 610 watt
Video Card- EVGA 9500 GT 1GB
RAM-G. Skill Ripjaws 1333 4GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Monitor- Acer 23" 1920 X1080

Ok when I 1st bought this game I could play it for about 30-45 minutes then I would get the " Fallout:NV has stopped working" crash. Annoying but I logged about 50 hours with this issue. Fast forward 1 month. I upgraded my video card from the EVGA 9500GT to an ASUS GTX 460. Same exact system specs except for a much better video card.Ever since that day when I try to load a save game it crashes " Fallout:NV has stopped working". Since upgrading to a GTX 460 I haven't even been able to play this game once. When I try to start a new game it goes through the intro movie and when it starts to load the game I get the same crash. My BIOS, mobo, chipset, video card drivers are all up to date. I have reinstalled Fallout New Vegas at least 2 times.Out of about 50 games I have installed this is the only game I have a problem with. Everything from CRYSIS to Metro 2033 to Battlefield: Bad company 2 runs flawlessly. I emailed Bethesda tech support off and on for almost 2 months with no luck. I know others have the same problem as I do and am wondering if anyone has found a way to fix this. I had stopped even trying with this game a few weeks ago but would really love to be able to play it and enjoy the new DLC. This could have been game of the year if it weren't for all these bugs/ other issues. So, has anyone had any luck resolving the "Fallout: New Vegas has stopped working" crash?

Hi UltraViolence,

I cannot help you with your problem as I am having the same issue and figured if enought of us write in maybe something will be done.

My system:

I5-750
Asus Maximus III extreme
Corsair 850
Asus EAH matrix platinum 2 gig
Ram corsair 8 gig
O/S Windows 7 ultimate
All drivers are up to date

I have loaded the game, had the updates intalled. I can watch the intro until I get to the play menu. Once I hit play and start the game I get this screen with some sort of clock I guess it is a load progress indicater and the the system crashes. This is as far as I can get.

I have reloaded 3 times, I have cleared the cache, I have run file integrity, I have gone to the files and changed compatibility to Windows XP service pack 3 (All suggestions from this forum).

Still having the same exact problem.

" Fallout:NV has stopped working" crash.

Everything from Civilisation 5, Battlefield: Bad company 2, Supreme Commander 2 runs flawlessly.

Has anyone had any luck resolving the "Fallout: New Vegas has stopped working" crash?

Thread hijacking is very impolite, and if you actually hope to get an answer, you should post your own problem report, and provide better information than you have done so far.

Regarding the original author's problem, I can't tell a great deal more, but I strongly suspect it is a conflict between the graphics driver that isn't entirely compatible with the old video card, and the game's own preferences for graphics. That is a four year old design, the former Geforce 8600 GT, which was renamed and reissued three years ago, when the GTX200 series was running late to market, especially the GT 240 and GTS 250. You need to search out one of the oldest Win7 graphics drivers you can find, downgrade your Windows OS, or else upgrade graphics to something newer.

Good day Gorath,

As a corrrection this is not a thread hijacking but more of a compilation of the same problems users have been reporting.

I have read back about 7 pages of posts and most of them contain the same problem with no real solution. As a customer purchasing software from a company I would expect it to be plug and play. Yes I have read your posts we're you explain that due to the multitude of systems and possible combinations you may have conflicts and I do sympathize with the developpers. However, it would be nice of them to acknowldge the problems and identify a possible roadmap for fixing the problems so we don't all end up with a non usable game.

If you prefer and find it to be more efficient to swamp the forum with identical problems to create volume, so be it easy enough to cut and paste my problem in a new thread but having been on boards for many years I have seen groups of related problems being consolidated into one thread where discussions and possible fixes are identified instead of having to read through pages and pages of posts to pick up one possible solution here and there.

Anyhow, my apologies to UltraViolence and as per your request I will initiate a new thread for this problem and add to the many posts.

I was having kinda the same problem, except I could not even get past the Bethsda screen before crash. Built a new system for gaming and thought it should be able to handle anything I throw at it for the next3-5 years and then I buy NV and could'nt run it. Got so frustrated I did full wipe and install of windows and all patching for it then installed NV and everything I had before except my keyboard drivers. I Dl'd fresh from manufactures site and then it ran. Tried all the fixes I could and I belive this one thing was my problem. Same type of driver, just 64 bit instead of the 32 bit that had been updating. Basically had to check for new versions of the drivers manually and not let the program do it. That was my problem. Thinking it might have been a conflict between the Nvidia and Steelseries drivers cause I had the Merc before the new build and used the old drivers thinking it would just update itself like it normally did, but it only did it on the 32 bit drivers. Don't really know. Not sure if this might be your problem. Hope that you get it running and if this helps anyone, looking for answers, that's great.

Asus M4A79XTD Evo MB (for all the SATA ports on it)
8 GB Corsair 1600 XMS
EVGA GTX 470
AMD 1090t Black Edition
1000 watt Corsair PSU
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
Intell 120Gb SSD boot
2 1TB Hitachi Deskstars for Programs and storage
Sony DVD rom
2 Light-On Burners
Logitech MX 518
Steelseries Merc

When I update drivers I use Driver Sweeper to sweep completely and disable the auto driver search in Windows 7. Then when I reboot I load the drivers I want.

Gorrath I think you misunderstood my post. Game ran for about 45mins- an hour before crashing with the 9500GT but I have since upgraded to a GTX 460. I have tried different drivers with the 9500GT before I ever got the GTX 460 but it was the same crash after 45 mins- hour. Since upgrading to the GTX 460 it has been entirely unplayable, with crashes either on launch or just before the game loads. I have also tried different drivers with the GTX 460 but it remains unplayable. With all the different graphics drivers I've used the problem has stayed the same so I'm pretty much guessing its not a problem with the graphics drivers.I've also used 2 different BIOS, 2 different mobo and chipset drivers. Been having this problem so long I'm almost ready to take this game disc out and destroy it with my shotgun.

Asus gamerOSD has caused problems for some. Some other background application or service can also be the culprit.
Have you tried a clean boot?

I have nvidia 260.99 drivers but 266.58 seem to be the latest. You might also try reinstalling your graphics drivers. Select clean install from the wizard.
There should be a checkbox in there somewhere for clean install. Make sure to run the installtion program as administrator by right clicking and selecting
run as admin.

To the original poster: I also have a GT series card and had similar problems. The devs seem to have excluded these cards from testing, many people have been reporting problems. For me the workaround was (I completed the game and had a lot of fun with it), sadly, to play with AA and AF and water effects and radio all turned off. Try it, you'll get used to it :D

After I turn AA or any of the other features mentioned above on, a minute outdoors is enough to crash the game.

I've tried 3-4 different graphics drivers, same crash. I always do a clean install and run as admin , still no luck. Have also tried with AA,AF etc. etc turned off. Same thing, crashes before it can even load a game. Also don't use ASUS gamerOSD or any other background programs like that. I won't do a clean boot for this game. Afraid I'd go through all that and have the same thing. Its a shame this game is in this sad bug filled, unplayable state.

I've been off this game for a couple of months or more, and I see that nothing's changed in the interim. I'm still crashing like a maniac and I see the level of clue is no better than it was in late November.
Interesting that many of us are running ASUS rigs. I'm running the HD5450 HD card but in fairness, I'm having massive stability problems beyond this game, so i can't actually blame this on Bethesda as I did when I first started.

I just wish there were better support out there. It's almost nonexistent now. Good luck guys.

I think this forum is as official as it get's for support but it seems none of the game developers do support on it.

Do a DebugDiag like in this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?act=findpost&pid=17152447 and post a link to the results here or even send me a private with a link to the results and I'll see if I can find your bug.

Developers DO support it. They are making fixes based on what people post here. Just because they don't comment doesnt mean they are not busy.

Also, Bethesda does have a support number you can call.

I would believe they're focused on developing and bug fixing the DLCs now. It's good to hear they're busy with supporting the main game and I hope they keep up with the fixes because some issues from FO3 that didn't get attention haven't gotten attention in FO:NV either.
