It depends (a little) on if you want to go melee, or unarmed.
My base suggestions would be to have a decently high strength (higher level melee weapons can require 8 or 9 str to wield effectively), and decently high endurance for the HP, and being able to pick up the perks that add to DT (stonewall, toughness).
I normally make a character and tag one weapon skill and two utility skills, in your case I would obviously tag melee weapons, repair is optional, but useful when you get ahold of bigger/more expensive weapons, then either lockpicking, science, or speech seem the most useful to me.
