Would someone please explain Caravan to me? : Fallout: New Vegas

I am either experiencing a bug or I really dont get caravan. It won't let me play any number card on any other number card at all. I have tried same suit, consecutive numbers, etc. It seems I can play face cards, I can't ever play a number on another number. Is this a bug or am I just doing it wrong?

Make sure you are cursoring down below the card that's already on the table, not beside it. This confused me as well - it will allow you to place face cards beside other cards, but that's it. As long as you are correctly ascending or descending (which is set by the second card in that series), you can place it below what's already there.

As for learning all the different things the face cards do - I recommend referring to the pip boy. Honestly, I only remember that the Queen lets me change directions, and the King doubles the value of the card it's placed next to. I don't even worry about Jacks. After that, it's all about the quickest way to 26 for each of the three series. Once your mind wraps around the number 26 and how all the numbers from 1-9 divide into 26, caravan is cake.
