Charater dies in its sleep.

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:04 am

I decided that the first time through the game. I was going "hardcoe" and not using any mods, tweaks or cheats. With one tiny little exception. "set timescale to 3"

So I play for while and all is well. Until I try to use a bed. I set the amount of time I want my guy to sleep at 8 hours. I click sleep.

He dies of starvation and dehydration.

Of all the bugs I have come across in this game so far. That has to be the dumbest.

You weren't already somewhat starving and dehydrated when you went to sleep?

The timescale tweak shouldn't make a difference.

Nope, I made sure he was fed and water before I tried sleeping. I mentioned the timescale because it was the only change I had made to the game.

are you sure that is a bug? you set timescale to 3. (i assume using on PC using the console?) They probubly felt no reason, or overlooked, to sync hardcoe stats to the timescale. Why would you sleep 8 hours? ive never had to sleep past 4.

Does "set timescale to 3" make the days longer than 10 minutes? If so I want to do that. The super rediculous short days and nights are my biggest non-bug peev!

Edit: Because is <> are

Yeah, same happened to me... and it's all about the timescale.
I set it to 6, and the hardcoe mechanics apparently seize up for some reason, I don't know why. You'd sleep and suddenly your H2O/Food meters would fly off the charts. Which is strange... wouldn't setting the timescale back mean LESS time is passing while you sleep? But oh well...
I had to move it around a little to get some balance. I don't like it at the default, the days seem to zip by, and it feels off rp-wise because there's no real day/night awake/sleep cycle.
I'm at 20 now. Not super happy with it, but I'm not dying in my sleep. The frequency with which I need to feed and drink is annoying, though. I can't sleep for 5 hours without waking up dehydrated and near starvation. I guess that's what breakfast is for.

Yep, I'm on a PC. I am above the age of twelve therefore I do not own a gaming console. (that's a joke btw)

For RP reasons. I sleep eight hours IRL. So I have my toon so as well.

They should have known some of us would want to slow down the pace of the day night cycles.

I'll probably change the timescale myself too, guess I'll see if I get the same issue.

Yup I set timescale to 1 and all hell broke loose;/ turning it back to 30 didnt seem to fix it either so I just stopped using hardcoe.

Well, after I changed it back, the problems stopped for me, so that's interesting.
I had considered momentarily shutting down hardcoe over it--those default days are much, much too fast--but there's too many things I like about hardcoe to do that, such as ammo weight, stims over time, companion death....
I don't know anything about GECK. I wonder if this is mod-able.

I'm working on a dynamic timescale mod, for personal use unless I get permission to release from the guy who made the one for FO3 (or no answer in the next week or so, in which case I'll post it but credit him for the original mod). It's pretty easy to just change the timescale back to 30 via script every time you enter a menu, trouble is I'm crashing now as soon as I finish sleeping, so the engine doesn't seem to like the change back. I'm experimenting with various delays, maybe I'll have some luck. It's a weird bug either way.

Putting in a 100 frame delay fixed the crashes (10 wasn't cutting it), so it works. I'm probably going to incorporate the dynamic timescale option in Imp's More Complex Needs, it'll be interesting to see how that works out.

It isn't a bug if you altered the game's settings. It is an error you introduced yourself.

Setting the timescale to 3 instead of 30 multiplied all dehydration/hunger gain by 10. Of course you died.

One of Fallout's biggest selling points is it's moddability, its settings are meant to be tweaked. If changing something as basic as the timescale breaks a major feature, it's a bug. And lowering the timescale should slow down the rates, not speed them up, so it's not exactly intuitive or obvious.

Yes it is a bug, it's an error that shouldn't be happening. The hardcoe settings should be synced to the timescale. Changing the time scale is a very common thing with mods, and there's clearly something wrong if doing so completely breaks hardcoe mode. Reading about this one is just one more nail to hammer into the coffin for me. I liked the idea of hardcoe mode but I also like playing with a timescale of 15. So I guess I'll be waiting until the GOTY at least before I even think about buying this game. Just too many bugs, starting right from the installer. I can't even be bothered following the developments of this game anymore, it just seems like a colossal waste of time.

Here's a fix I just uploaded to the Nexus: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10874. Adjust your timescale via the menu item in the armor section of your inventory. There's both a static and dynamic timescale mode (the dynamic mode was inspired by forevernomad's Immersive Timescale mod, though its a bit simpler). Part of the script temporarily sets your timescale back to 30 while you sleep, so no more dying.

The issue is that he changed the timescale without bothering to also change the hardcoe needs rate. It isn't a bug, just a user error caused by incomplete understanding of the modding process.

See above. It is not a bug, its an error resulting from his tampering without understanding the process and how the needs in hardcoe mode are calculated. You can change their rate but you must make it match your timescale or you will get wacky disproportionate results like he did. If it was tied directly to the timescale and immutable, you would not be able to mod the rate at which you become dehydrated or hungry.
