I was wondering if you could go for the independent ending & still keep the presidential suite?

As long as you talk to Mr. House (without having the Platinum Chip in your possession), you will unlock the suite. It remains available to you after you kill House.

But if I kill Mr. House won't the rest of the casino become hostile towards me?

Nope. The robots go hostile when you access House's secret lair in the 38, but after you kill him, they become passive again. So... when you decide to use that terminal to open the path to the real Mr. House... RUN into it and get down there as fast as you can. The sooner you kill that SOB, the sooner the robots calm down.

As an aside, if you want to sell the snowglobes, you should do it before killing House, because Jane the robot will disappear once House is dead.
