Caravan - NPCs won't bet, when does the tutorial end?

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:53 pm

I've been periodically attempting to play Caravan in my game, but I haven't had much luck actually winning anything. I've challenged several different NPCs, but no matter what, they won't bet and the "Auto Match" option does nothing. I can raise, but this doesn't actually affect the stakes. I've won some games and lost some, but my total winnings and losses are both '0'.

In addition, even though I've purchased several caravan cards which are sitting in my inventory, I'm unable to select them. All I see are the tops cards given to me by Ringo in Goodsprings when I played my first game.

Does anybody know if there's a point when this stops being the case? I understand how to play the game, I just seem to be unable to play a competitive game with my own cards.

After one point I can't get past it. I do the first two deals and then i have to get rid of my whole deck and then the only thing I can do is cancel and lose. Am I just not getting it?

Is this from just repeatedly playing Ringo?

Edit: If you're referring to what happens when actually playing the hand, then yeah, check poster below me. There's a few guides out already that details what each of the cards do and which cards can be played. Keep in mind that you also have to use the up and down arrows to specify a position for the card.

I'm maybe kind of slightly getting the idea of Caravan, maybe. The easiest thing to do is Google it and there will be guides a plenty. There are SO many rules.

I can't get the NPCs to bet anything, either. Is it a bug, or do we have to do something special?

P.S. I've tried playing against Ringo, the guy in Primm, and a few other characters.

It looks like I've got this working. I went back to Ringo, and surprisingly, he offered a bet. Other NPCs are now doing so as well. The cards in my inventory still don't seem to be of any use, so, perhaps I need 30 unique cards before I can start using them? Or perhaps that's just bugged as well.

Note that I just restarted Steam to update my game with today's patch. My guess is that this fixed the issue. Either that, or all of the NPCs of the Mojave were just waiting for me to play Ringo again, which doesn't make sense.

As for the poster with the saved game troubles, I'm having this problem as well. Quick Saves and Auto Saves don't persist beyond exiting the game. However, manual saves do, so I find myself having to manually save periodically (in the event of a crash, although I've only crashed once in about 15 hours of playing) and manually save before I exit the game.

I am having this problem as well. Why do the NPCs not bet any caps on a game of caravan? I've gotten the update. And I can buy and sell from the NPC, I've seen that they have plenty of caps to bet. What does it take to get them to bet caps on a game of caravan?
