Does Steam Patch Fallout: New Vegas? : Fallout: New Vegas

I bought New Vegas pretty much when it came out. After hearing the immense amount of problems and bugs, I decided to hold off playing it until things got better.

I have a box copy of the game but of course it's under Steam. At random times, steam would update something on New Vegas, I assumed this was the latest patch for the game.

So recently I decided to play New Vegas and I have been having crashing problems. Every time I play the game will crash about 45 minutes after playing.

I am running Windows 7 and when I go into the 'Games' folder in the start menu and click on the Fallout: New Vegas icon, it says on the bottom of the window that the game is version 1.0.0.0

Does this mean I am running the un-patched version of the game? doesn't steam download and apply patches to games automatically?

By default the game should update automatically.

YOur probably looking at a shortcut?
Go to your steam directory and find the main falloutnv.exe.
Check that file for a file version.

I think the version can also be found in game in the options menu i think.
I could be wrong. Im not sure what the latest version number is.

I just checked the exe located in the Steam directory and the version says 1.2.0.352

I assume this means I have the patches. Although I am still experiencing crashes, is there anything I can do to reduce them?

I am running:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black edition
GPU: XFX N-vidia GTS 250 Core Edition
RAM: 4GB Corsair 1333Mhz

I have a phenom II x4 black processor as well and it runs fine on my computer.
Do you play any other games? How do they run?
Have you been able to play fallout crash free in the past or is this your first time playing?
Do you have any mods running?

Looking at what the crashes actually are can help. You can use the event viewer for this.
Under start menu -> type event viewer in the bottom textbox.
Look under application logs.
