Nevermind the game, it won't even install!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:17 am

So, after I bought F:NV about... three weeks ago, I'm finally installing it now. When it comes to playing video games, I usually use my XBox 360, so, although I haven't installed any games on my computer recently, I firmly believe that a requirement for an internet connection to INSTALL SOMETHING is total B-S! (Gives middle finger) right here, Steam.

ANYWAYS. Enough for the rant.

After I put in my registration code, yada-yada-yada, it says: "Please first activate the original game. The product code you've entered requires ownership of another product before activation. If you are trying to activate an expansion pack or downloadable content, please first activate the game, then activate this downloadable content."

The only product code I have is the one that came on a piece of paper advertising the "Classic Pack", which is downloadable content.

Did I get ripped off, and not get a registration code? If so... now what?

I'm assuming you bought it from a shop, hence your rant against having to use Steam. Your registration code 'should' be in one of the following places.

Below where you disk sits in the case.

Underneath the disk itself

Somewhere on the manual. Usual place is on the back cover.

If it's not in any of these places and can't be found anywhere, I suggest you take it back to the shop and tell them the problem, they 'may' give you a replacement that does come with the registration code.

What you're trying to do is activate and download the bonus pack without getting the game itself activated and installed.

This.

Also, you'll find that Steam offers lots of great functionality, you won't even have to worry about losing or damaging your disc anymore because it will just let you redownload the game whenever, wherever you want.

But only if you have an internet connection that is as fast as light... if you want to install the game using a slow connection (as i have), you will probably need about 2 days .... nice invention steam, if you weren't forced to use the internet activation!

Never was, nor will be an issue with Fallout 3 because FOSE negates the need for the disc to be in the drive. Plus the EULA allowes for a single copy of the disc for archiving in case such events happen.

Plus i would much rather install a game in 5 minutes then 5 hours.

I don't really see why you're bragging about a Fallout 3 third party NoCD workaround in a thread about New Vegas.

I actually wrote
"Steam is bullsh*t" but it has been censored by this forum (that's why it's in [] )

But you're not forced to download the game, are you? It's an option that you'll be really happy about if you ever lose your disc.

Better yet, Steam has a built-in backup function! How about that?

You are. You must activate it and after that it downloads all the patches. No way to turn it off, because of internet activation. I tried it thousand times. No way to get around it.

I used that function.
Still starts downloading all patches AND activating. No way to play it after offline install.

You can turn off updates for the game.
You could also make a new backup with the patches already installed.

I have no advice about activation, but even with a slow connection that shouldn't be a problem.

You don't have internet on the PC you play on?

Yes. After install. And after activation. If you turn it off before, it will turn on on it's own directly after activation. That's the problem with steam. You can't install it offline, because activation is needed. But activation restets the game config. And therefore turns on updates. The first patch starts downloading. There is the next problem with steam. You can't cancel a patch download, because it says "99% ready" in the game's status. Which means you cant run it in offline mode anymore.
I tried it with Half Life 2 years before.

Same thing with fallout.

And yes, there is a internet connection. But it's limited in traffic. So i don't want to download patches for games that run fine without them, at least until i put my laptop to a fast connection in the city.

Ah, i see. Now i can understand your frustration. Still, the game's box clearly warns you about Steam and the connection requirement.

I think your anger is misdirected, the problem has more to do with your internet provider.

EDIT: I think i have an idea for you update problem, i'll see if it works.

If the disc would contain a regular installer, i wouldn't need any internet provider at all.
If steam would be optional, then you could use it (it has benefits, of course) and i could use the regular installer. I don't see a reason to force the use of steam.

And yes, there is a warning on the packaging. That's why I dont buy any steam games anymore. But it's kind of sad, because it just a problem caused by steam, not by the game itself.

But in the case of fallout it doesn't matter, because fallout is bugged anyway xD

Okay well that didn't work... i agree a little more flexibility with patching wouldn't hurt.

It can't be optional as it also serves as the game's DRM.

Again, it's not really Steam's fault that you bought the game but don't have the requirements to use it. That's like calling Crysis a [censored] game because you're trying to run it on integrated graphics.

There is a difference: My computer's specs are good enough to play the game. Steam is not the game. It's a replacement for copy-protection. If a game doesn't run because of it's copy protection, then it has nothing to do with requirements. You can also write on games that use SecuRom the names of cd-drive that don't fail to recognize the correct disc. And on the packaging is written that you need internet for activaion, which i have. There is no word about "1 gb forced download"...
