Bugs and Bugs with Bugs

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:31 am

Hey there. New forum member. Finally got New Vegas recently, when the 1st DLC came out. I waited for it to be patched.

Looooooks like maybe I should have waited more?
I've been playing for a week now, and enjoying the heck outta it, but I have run into a few repeating bugs. And yes, my game is patched.

Potential minor spoilers below. Really, quite minor stuff. But here's some space.
And I'm not trying to sound angry about these bugs, just talking about them in a humorous manner. Taking them with a chuckle.

One - Insects Swim in Dirt: insects, mostly scorpions and ants, but sometimes flies, are often stuck halfway in the ground. I saw a half dozen cases of bark scorpions on the train tracks actually *under* the train tracks with just their stingers sticking up out, just last night. Bloatflies aren't immune to this ground-tunneling either. And sometimes when I get close to them and fight em in VATS, if it goes cinematic, I end up wedged in the ground myself.

Two - Creatures Doing Handstands: When viewed way off in the distance, I often see scorpions, ants, and sometimes centaurs walking at a near 90 degree angle to the ground. Scorpions and ants seem to like to walk on their front claws or legs, their tails and rear legs wiggling in the air. Centaurs seem to prefer walking on their hind legs (hands?). My theory is that the centaurs are emulating their Super Mutant friends. All these critters seem to be pretty shy about their handstands though, because when they see you get close they stop doing it.

Three - Magic See-Through Rocks. I've seen a few of these, mostly near the Gibson shack, when looking north toward Helios One and the entrance to Scorpion Gulch. Missing textures, basically, on the back side of large rock masses.

Four - The Amazing Floating Weapons: Super Mutants have special weapons which float in mid air. I've only seen a few Super Mutants so far, so I can only state with certainty that this has happened in Black Mountain. When going up the path to Utobitha, the muties carrying light machine guns, sledgehammers, flamethrowers, etc, seem to have a weapon glitch. Kill the mutie, and their weapon floats in the air near their corpse. Even if you loot them, the floating weapons remain.

Four Point Five - Useless Neil: Speaking of Black Mountain, I thought this was a bug at first, but now I'm not sure. Meeting Neil not at his shack but by coming out of Scorpion Gulch, I get the option to meet Neil up in the village. I worked my way up the mountain path, and Neil ran like The Flash past me down the mountain, then back up, as if he wasn't sure where I was supposed to meet him. I finally got through, what, all but maybe two Muties on the way up to the radio tower area, and there's Neil by the shelter made of a fallen satellite dish. But since I didn't see him tucked in the corner, I went a few feet forward and ended up fighting two Nightkin - the last two enemies on the mountain. Neil doesn't have any function at that point. I reloaded and talked to Neil, and he apparently has the option to lead the very few remaining baddies away - is he really supposed to be there? not much, much further down the mountain? Is that all he does, lead 2 'Kin away after you've already loudly slaughtered a dozen Muties, Kin, and Centaurs? It would make more sense for him to be lower down and be used to lead a bunch of 'em away.

Five: Sidekicks are not Passive when Passive, and they can Teleport. Back at Black Mountain, I tried to sneak my way up, avoiding patrols, but for some reason my sidekicks have this habit of suddenly running or flying or teleporting over somewhere to start fighting enemies they see. And they're on Passive. I had this happen when trying to sneak up to the back of the radio station, to the 75 lockpick door. I heard fighting and turned the corner to see Boone on the other side of the fence from me, fighting a Mutant. I have no idea how he got there. This happened to me in the Mine as well - I'd enter, and ED-E was right behind me, but Boone was 100 feet inside the mine, already down the ramp, and into the main area, fighting Legionnaires. He didn't run past me, he just teleported further into the mine. I reloaded and tried this four times with the same results, so instead I reloaded, told him to wait, and did the quest myself. The sidekicks are great help fighting, but they're a burden when they zoom off and ruin my stealth. Heck, most of the time I can't even crouch and try to snipe an enemy for a critical because Boone's already firing at them from a quarter mile away! Least stealthy sniper ever, man. I imagine in his days in the NCR he'd sit in a perch and yell HEY OVER HERE GUYS once he spotted a raider. If sidekicks are set to passive, why do they attack everything on sight??

Six - The Hat That Wasn't There: Zero percent hats don't really exist, and stack. A few times I've had a hat (the +1 PER type, usually Stormchasers) that got to Zero. I tried to put in in a case to save it for later, and another copy of it at a non-zero status stayed in my inventory. If I tried to merge the two to repair, picking up the broken one just made it vanish out of my inventory. Removing the good one made the zero condition one reappear in my inventory. I've had this happen with spears as well, but so far only spears and hats.

Seven - Do I Need These Toy Rockets? : I finished the quest that might have used the toy rockets full of glowy isotope. But I can't drop 'em. I didn't use them, i finished the quest another way. But I can't drop them! I guess I really like the toy rockets.

Eight - The Hidden Valley Sandstorm: So I go into Hidden Valley, and there's a sandstorm at night. That's pretty cool actually! But if it's only dusk or dawn, and I am in the storm, the light levels glitch. I walk out of Hidden Valley, and the light level goes to full daytime as soon as I hit the gate and the storm vanishes from around me - but then I walk a few feet forward, and it goes to dusk/dawn proper levels.

There, that's all I can think of at the moment. Further bulletins as events warrant.

Most of those are fairly minor bugs. Quest items can't be dropped from inventory, ever...(without mods that is)...that's probably intentional to keep people from accidentally selling/losing them. But it is annoying that they don't become droppable once a quest is finished.

Enemies clipping into things...minor graphic glitch, I see it in a lot of other games as well, but it is sometimes pretty bad in NV. :D

Companion passive setting does not equal "never engage". They really should have called it "Defensive". What happens is, they will not engage enemies they detect as long as those enemies also cannot detect YOU the player. That is, once the enemy goes into the "detect/search" mode (like when you get CAUTION if you're in stealth), companions will still attack/make the first move. That is not a bug. But companions teleporting ... if that's what they're really doing, that would be a glitch, yes. Sometimes tho, they do manage to get by you/behind you/around you without you noticing. Happens to me all the time. Since their detection is a radius thing, which ignores walls/line of sight, inside Vaults/buildings they will turn corners, open doors, go down stairs, backtrack and run all over the place to get to enemies as if they have motion detectors on their guns ala the Marines in Aliens. Sometimes when this happens they glitch into super-run-speed, like when they're running to catch up to you after falling behind.

That one is just a warning of CTD's to come. If you notice items not stacking correctly then get rid of the one causing the problem.
It's been around pre-patch, and not been addressed so far.
It causes minor quantity display problems in the pipboy (as you've seen) and also the barter and reapir menus.
The CTD's occur with hotkey'd items and some Bethesda script functions.

It only effects the rapairable items... weapons and apparel.
Hats do seem to be a common culprit, and I've seen it happen with all kinds of weapons from a stick of dynamite to heavier weapons like the incinerator.

Thanks for the responses!

LadyCrimson, these are minor compared to some bugs, but the fact that they are there in new vegas but not in fully patched F3 bothers me greatly. The handstands and clippin sticking are just pathetic.

The fact that Boone and ED-E go violent on enemies when I am in "hidden" is a problem, but their sudden flight or teleportation to another area to fight things is infuriating. The thing when Boone warped halfway through the mine before I moved a foot was annoying.

Tunaisafish, thank you for the warning about CTDs. I will throw any glitched items into a river or something and not carry them and risk issues.

I've witnessed most of these bugs myself.

I've shelved the game until a new patch comes out. There was mention of one back in late Feb. But no word since.

Also, good luck with getting a mod to reply or confirm or.... something. They avoid this section like the plague. We're on our own here.

So where does one go to report bugs? Support listened to all of these issues (and the new one I discovered, turns out my male character is given female voice for grunts, punches, etc, wtf?) and said they didn't know what to do about any of 'em.

I guess just reporting here is all i can do? Hey, someone from gamesas, any way these bugs can get to the people who look into bugs?

They read the forums, looking for trends and reports...they just don't reply...and I wouldn't personally expect/demand them to. I'd rather they spend time working on games/patches then endlessly responding to the hundreds/thousands of (often) similar threads on forums.

Keep in mind that this isnt an official support venue. From the please read before posting thread:
Please note that these forums are not used for official technical support. Rather, we plan to use it to provide updated information and allow dialog between gamers to solve common problems, such as the most common problem of video or sound card drivers (or a lack of updated ones).

For technical and customer support, please call 410-568-3685, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, visit support.gamesas.com or email support@gamesas.com.

The insect stuff is so minor that i doubt they will do anything about it. Collision detection is flawed somehow but thats a common issue with most games. Bear in mind the scale of a game like fallout 3 nv when
comparing it to other games. The game houses a huge OPEN world to explore and run in without loading screens and barriers that most other games employ. Its extreamly difficult to account for all the issues that can arise with
clipping and things falling through the map etc. As i said before its really a minor issue that isnt all that common enough to be annoying imo.

As long as they're reading it and picking up bug trends, that's fine enough by me. Thank you. I don't expect 'em to respond to everything, i agree.

Thanks man, but I'm already aware of the scope of Fallout NV. If I am comparing to any other game, it's Fallout 3. I've been playing the Fallout series for many years now, I'm familiar with their openness and scope. The problem is that FNV should be similar enough to F3 that things that are the same in both games should work equally well in both. New functionality? Sure. But if you're tossing in a dang monster from F3 to FNV and it's got the same code behind it, why does it suddenly decide to dance on its claws and swim in dirt in Nevada when it walked perfectly sanely in Maryland? Dig?

I called that customer service line, went through a list of nine separate bugs with the tech support guy, he said after each one that he had no solution for it, and that I should post the list on this forum. Because he was just support, not bug reporting.

The insect stuff would be minor if, and only if, it didn't happen every 3 minutes. It's extremely common. I don't know why you say it isn't all that common. It happens a half dozen times an hour it seems.

Also, and here's the big problem, in the months I spent playing and replaying Fallout 3, I saw that happen only rarely. Only once in a blue moon was a radscorpion stuck in a rock in Virginia. Also, none of the east-coast radscorpions or centaurs danced on their hind legs.

I say its minor since you can still kill things and loot them unless they fall through the map. It is not a major game breaking thing. It more funny or quirky. The problem is common enough. The severity of it may differ. Seems to happen more to insects or scorpions.
It did happen to me but not nearly enough to be annoying. I didnt mind it so much even if it did happen so theres an element of subjectivity there.

Different ppl experience glitches/bugs in different frequencies. I didn't get much of the clipping either...hardly any actually, until the last patch, where I suddenly started noticing it a lot more. But a lot of people were reporting it long before the last patch, so again, just depends on the user and system and luck. I also think the more mods you start to pile onto the game, the more wacky glitches you'll likely encounter.

Why thankee! I was around here during the F3 release days but lost my login so I made a new one.

And ohhh was I an angry gamer back then. But Fallout 3 was fixed to my satisfaction in the end. And gamesas have been saints compared to another company I got a lemon game from.

Plus I am a huge Fallout fan. I have F1 and F2 memorized. Like i'd pass up New Vegas??
