Is there any BONUS for reaching Skill Level 100?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:31 pm

When one reached a Skill Level of 100 in Oblivion, one received an automatic extra perk. I remember being able to skip across the surface of water in Oblivion when I reached a Skill Level 100 in something there (i think acrobatics).

Are there any bonus perks when one reaches a true Skill Level of 100 in New Vegas? Or does everybody just play for 90 and then use a magazine for the last 10 when needed?

In Oblivion, reaching various stages of skill levels grants special perks, for example, with weapon skills, for example, gaining higher skill levels unlocks new power attacks. Reaching one hundred in any skill just gives a perk that is usually better than the ones from lower levels. As for New Vegas, raising your skills to one hundred doesn't really give any special benefits you wouldn't get from using items to increase them to that level instead, as far as I know. Still, I generally make a habit of only using magazines for things like skill checks during speech, for picking locks or hacking computers, or for special actions that require a certain skill level. So while for skills like science and speech, I might consider leaving them at 90 and just using magazines when I need 100 skill points, if it's for skills like guns, I wouldn't leave it at 90 just because I can use magazines to raise it higher. Although I might not raise it to 100 anyway because it seems to me that with most weapons, you don't really need a skill level that high to be able to have pretty good accuracy.

Although, I don't think I've actually raised any of my skills to 100 yet, though I think my repair is pretty close. So I can't speak from personal experience, but at least I don't recall it doing anything special other than just generally making you better at that skill in Fallout 3.

Nah. Just do what you're doing and only take skills to 90. Or heck, even 80, because you can further boost skills with clothing and indirectly with chems (chems increase a SPECIAL stat, which in turn improves a skill).

I wouldn't advise reaching SP 100 in the first place, I work backwards to all the permanent +SP items I can obtain in the game therefore the maximum level I would raise my SP to is 84, because there are 4 books in New Vegas that give +4 each meaning +16 SP in total to each SP. Having said that a lot of people stop at 75, or 70, and use apparel to gain +10 SP to get to 80 then use SP temporary books to get to 100.

To your question, no there is no bonus other than some perks: The 'Jury Rigging' perk requires 90 Repair SP in order to be obtained. Unless you do not get that many temporary SP books I see no benefit to using all your SP to get to 100.

With comprehension and books you can get ~20pts into each skill so I always stop at around 70 gradually get books.

Stay at 80 until you've found all books for 1 skill, the fill out the rest.
I hate relying on magazines..

Just find a book and then get your skill to 91.. 3 more books will make it hit 100 and realy there isnt anything in the game that requires 100 that cant be gained by reading a mag to get there. There are however alot of perks that require 90 hard skill.

There are a few speech challenges that use 100 values as well... Like other posters said, you can use temp boosts, but you never really know when the speech checks are gonna come up, some of them don't have a way to exit the dialogue, boost and come back, and even when they do, I don't really like leaving to read a magazine and come back to ask the exact same thing.

I was disappointed when I didn't get a new VATS unarmed move at 100 like I did at 50 and 75.

Definitely at least 4, either the Ranger post near Red Rock have 2, or one in Nellis.

Dean is 3 for console, however.

I got nothing for having guns and energy weapons at 100. The repair, lockpick and science skills I stopped at 80 since I had skill books and comprehension perk.

No extra bonuses other than just being better at it.

I raise plenty of skills to 100 because I like being the best at something without having to drink a potion or wear a magic hat. But that's the only real benefit.

Actually, i dont know if anyone noticed, but when you have 100 science and hack computers, you only have 5 possible options to pick, so imo chances not to hack are really minimal.
Cant say im 100% positive about it, but think it was something like that.

Depends on how hard the encryption is. If it's easy it will be almost impossible to not get right even if you pick randomly.

Can still happen, tbh i had more problems with easy encryption, when you have 10+ choices with 4 letters, than with hard ones.
What i was trying to say that having 100 science reduced number of possible choices to pick , only 5 left and 4 tries, aka really small chance to fail.

I also just realized that there are a number of weapons that have a skill req of 100. So you have a significant penalty to use them if you don't have maxed skill.

You guys do know how to remove duds, right? Higher science seems to increase quantity of that.

Absolutely agree here. You rarely need to waste experience points getting a skill to 100. I do it with guns and sneak toward the end of the game when I have more xp than I know what to do with and cause I use them all the time, but as you say 80 or so is good enough for guns. If you have the Comprehension perk and skill magazines you'd never want to raise most anything past 75 or 80 at the most. For example if you have lockpick magazines and that Vault jumpsuit that gives you +5 to lockpick you'd be insane to waste xp getting lockpick over 75 since there are very few really hard locks in the game and there's usually another way to open those anyway. I don't bother raising my repair higher than 25 because with the right vault jumpsuit and plentiful skill magazines I can temporarily raise my repair skill to 50 and make loads of weapon repair kits for free at one time. And there's so much money to be had in the wastelands why bother putting much into barter when the right clothes and magazines will let you pass the occasional dialog check.

Ha, I'm doing the exact opposite now on my second play through. I'm trying to collect all the skill books I can BEFORE I do any quests. It's fun. I'm making the great circle down south then back up to finally end up at Nellis before I begin playing the game proper. Course I'm kinda cheating I guess cause I know where they all are this time around. But it adds a new challenge, getting to some pretty difficult places at such a low level and getting the skill book as my prize.

Thats a big negatory. That's Oblivion, not Fallout. You just get better combat performance in those skills in and out of VATS, you repair stuff to 100, you get the real value of barter goods, you heal better with Medicine, you have better Sneak, you can make all the Survival items, and you can talk your way out of anything. The extra perks come from beating certain challenges I won't disclose here, but are available on the Fallout Wiki or No Mutants Allowed.
