The current game ini is located in the Documents/My Games/ Fallout New Vegas directory. There are 2 ini's in the Steam installation folder. The path is I believe is Steam/Common/Applications or Something/Fallout New Vegas/Data. It seems that both these files need to be edited for changes to take effect in the read only ini in the My Games location. Backing up the original ini's prior to editing is wise so you can restore them to the originals should it be required.

If you delete the My Games ini it will automatically be re-created when launching the game from those that are in the Steam folder location. You could delete or move the Steam ini's to some other folder so that the game doesn't recreate it but then the game wouldn't work. To remove completely from your system all Fallout New Vegas ini's uninstall the game.

Ok, all I could find are Fallout config settings, Fallout prefs config and renderer info text documents as well as the saves file, is one of those what I need to delete? Sorry, I have never had to do this type of data work and don't want to remove the wrong files.

What folder are you looking in?

Is the game installed or did you already uninstall it?

Why are you trying to delete the game ini files?

I am having major crash and freeze probs, sticky above says to try verifie integrity of game cache, mine failed to verify, so it says to delete ini files .I went to my docs as suggested right clicked then clicked properties and was shown as said above. game is still installed. I would be willing to delete and reinstall if that would work, but I have read posts that said it did not help and with over 100 hrs I'd hate to delete for nothing. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I think I see what you are doing. First you should probably make a back up of your save files located in the My Documents/Games/Fallout New Vegas folder. Save them somewhere safe so you don't lose your game progress. Next just delete all the files in the My Documents/Games/Fallout New Vegas folder. You would not need to delete the Saves folder, just the other files.

Locate the Steam install folder (default install location I believe is C:\Program Files\Steam) and browse to the Fallout New Vegas files. It should be under Steam/Common/Applications or Something/Fallout New Vegas/Data. There should be 2 files there with the ini extension. Cut and paste these to a backup subfolder in case you need to restore them.

As suggested in the sticky run the Steam application right click on the New Vegas entry in your games library and go to the verify integrity of the Game Cache and run it. Steam should check your game install and update/replace your current install with the current relevant files. Launch New Vegas and allow it to re-create the My Documents/Games/Fallout New Vegas ini and cfg files and see if you still have crashing problems. You will need to reset your controls and graphics etc after it re-detects your hardware to create the ini and cfg files.

Do you have Steam installed to the default location? I know people have trouble with running the game from the default Steam install location. If you still have crashing problems you might consider re-installing Steam to a location like C:\Games\ rather than the default C:\Program Files, or to a hard drive other than the C:\ drive.

1 file will probably fail to verify everytime. Look for this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameValidation.log

The file that fails is called installscript.vdf. This is a fairly common issue that has no bearing on the game.

Ok, thanks to both of you. I did as above but it is still the same [game freeze and crashing] by what I am reading in other posts nothing is going to help unless a patch is made, so I will just have to keep saving every 5 mins, also by the looks of my text above I should not type when tired. Thanks again for helping .

Might be worthwhile to try re-installing Steam to a different location from default and then re-installing the game. Maybe post a Dxdiag in case someone can notice something that might be contributing to the crashes. Remember you can save your save games though, just back them up to a safe location and re-paste them the My Documents/My Games/Fallout New Vegas/Saves after.

I have deleted all my save games, I think they were corrupted from the cards, I could not see any way to drop them, and have reinstalled. This time while playing I have stayed away from the cards [not putting them in my inventory] because I noticed when I tried to buy them from anyone or picked them from bodys or tried to play caravan my game crashed or froze up right after I ended the buy or closed my inventory and while playing cards. I am about 15 hours in and so far other than a few frame stutters no ctd's or freeze up. I will let you know whats happening after I hit about 50 hrs or so. I am also only keeping 4 saves including auto, a new save every time, then delete oldest one. I should say that I have zero mods. If this does not work then I will post my dx and go from there. Thanks again for your time I do appreciate it.
