Why isn't Fallout : New Vegas availible for Mac OSX?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:02 am

So, I'm considering Fallout : New Vegas, but since it isn't available for Mac OSX on steam etc, my only option is to buy it for PS3.
Why is this a big issue?
From what I've heard, Fallout 3 was MUCH better for PC, than PS3/Xbox 360, and I generally use my Mac a LOT more than my PS3.

My question is as follows:
'Why isn't Fallout : New Vegas available for Mac OSX'?
From what I can see all Bethesda has to do, is to create an application that can execute the same code that they've made for Windows. After all, that's what I believe they've done with the PS3, and Xbox 360.
It'd be better for their business, as far as I see it. Steam recently opened for Mac, so there has got to be a market for Games for Mac.

In the end, I guess I'm going to buy it for PS3 (Like many others), so Bethesda really isn't losing THAT much money from it, it's just that they could make more money by making available for Mac OSX, as far as I see it.

Thanks for reading;
I look forward to reading your response.

I bought Fallout New Vegas for Xbox 360 because I'm a Mac OS X user since June. I don't have a PC anymore.

If the game is released for Mac, I'll buy it a second time.

See, when I finally but the game for PS3, if they then release it for Mac OS X, I'll also buy it another time, I guess.

Maybe Bethesda is waiting to release it for Mac OS X to make money :S

You buy a windows computer if you have things to do, you buy a mac if you want to look cool in your college class

There is one problem with OSX compared to Windows. In OSX the graphiccarddriver is part of the OS and can't be updated separately. This means that issues with the cards remain for long long times and make a game not be able to run without significant workarounds or simply not at all. Not to mention most Macs have terrible graphiccards.

Apple never supported gaming on their desktop but this is slowly changing, however I guess it will take a year or two before any non-indie, non-blizzard dev will actually look at OSX.

Also the engine uses lots of windows libraries that can't be simply ported over to OSX. It takes time to code around or emulate which causes resources, and a Mac has few gaming resources available to begin with. I suggest using Bootcamp.

Because Bethesda wanted this game out ASAP. Screw the customers, they'll buy it because of the name.
