I was thinking it would be an interesting idea to have a dynamic repair mod, where you could break down gear and equipment into its parts, then take those parts and assemble them into kits for specific groups of items. Such as leather armor kits, large/small pistol kits... High tech repair kits... stuff...
It would be best if there were different types of parts, depending on the gun. So, lets say you'd break down your standard 9mm gun... you'd get something like:
Basic pistol parts
Small pistol parts
But, lets say you broke down the more complex, large automatic pistol... though i've only seen the 10mm sub machine gun, but this is what it'd give you:
Basic pistol parts
Automatic pistol mechanisms
Large pistol parts
Scrap (low rep level chance perhaps)
A rifle would do similar things, such as the basic rifle parts. And maybe there would be general "all round" items you'd pull off, such as mechanical springs, triggers, whatever.
Basically the goal is to have people take broken gear, break it down into whatever is useful (think item cost/repair level/condition) and then gather those parts and use them to repair other guns. The player would probably be able to take these parts, and assemble them into kits (of varying levels) for other guns.
Such as, if you had the exact gun, just use that for the best results, depending on the condition of the gun.
If you had a bunch of basic small pistol parts you could make a "basic small pistol repair kit" which would be made from just the basic pistol parts. This would have a minimal effect, but be cheap and easy to make since you'd see lots of basic pistol parts.
then an "advanced small pistol repair kit" would be made from more specific parts. Such as you'd have your basic parts, then a semi auto mechanism, and some parts specific to the small pistols.
Lastly, a perfect repair kit, would be made from a gross use of specific parts (perhaps the equivalent of multiple new guns worth), but would basically be able to take a gun thats totally broken, and restore it to full working 100% condition...
Armor would use a similar structure of course, but i had guns in mind when i thought of this...
To make it work out better, there should be a few different ways to assemble the repair kits. Example. An alternative to the basic small pistol repair kit made from just basic pistol parts, you could have one that used less basic pistol parts, in exchange for a small pistol specific item, such as a small pistol spring...
Last thing to mention, this would only be possible at a work bench, so no more repairing guns on the fly. Gata make sure your gear is in order before you head out. Perhaps you could bring along a tool kit which would allow you to make field repairs, just an idea though. IMO that should be modular.
I believe this would make the repairing aspect very immersive... The player would have to go out, scavenge gear, and decide whether to hoard the parts, or sell it off for caps. It would also make the repair mechanics around more valuable, since it would be pretty hard to get the parts you wanted for that highly advanced plasma rifle... Another effect this would have would be forcing players to only return with the good loot... What i've been doing, and probably others, is just hoarding everything, and then repairing them together to save weight and increase value. I dont think you should be able to do this on the fly.
Anyways, tell me what you think, and share some input!
