Music is terrible

The radio seems to have very few songs and even less speech, luckily the PC players can edit the songs on the radio to add their own songs they want and remove the ones they dont want, but I cant do that as I'm on xbox 360, so I thought with the first DLC that comes out could the developers do something like a custom radio slot to the pip boy and here's how it would work:
You open the pip boy and select the radio thats called something like Radio You or something else it doesnt matter, that then plays the songs that are either stored on the xbox 360 hard drive or reads the songs that are on an MP3 player that is plugged into the Xbox 360. but It wouldnt be just like playing a song on the xbox throught the mini dashboard because when people in the game talk or there is like a cutscene the music would quieten and be in the background while the NPC speaks in the forground, not like when you do play a song from the dashboard it just becomes the dominating sound and you cant hear what people have to say. I don't know if this is even possible but if there was a slight chance it was then this would be pioneering technology that a tonne of other games would follow.

What would be cool is if they connect it to gracenote database or something and write a program that will announce the songs that are playing. It could be some robotvoice or whatever. I think it will be impossible with current tech but man it would be so awesome!

People keep asking for more music to be added.... Exactly what is the problem with using your own CD or MP3 player or what have you? Yes, the game music is repetitive, and it always will be because of the resources they have to devote to music. (By which I mean royalty fees, data storage in the game etc.) And then you can't suit everybody. But if you play your own music, you get exactly what you want. No fuss, no problems.

Oh yea dont get me wrong I do currently play my own music through the xbox but my only issue is when I talk to NPC's the music just over powers the speech and I cant hear what the people are saying and playing music through the xbox also cancels out 90% of the game sounds like the sound when you level up or discover a new location.

Immersion.

Yeah, turning off the radio and listening to the game's (excellent) ambiance music or music from another source is what I do. That's a crappy "solution" though. They put a radio receiver on the player. They created multiple radio "stations". They have Mr. New Vegas offering local colour and occasional commentary on how your actions affect the game world (which is a rather brilliant immersion/motivation idea.) And then they include so little music content and of such a narrow nature that it becomes almost immediately repetitive and irritating. The option to add our own songs to Mr. N. V's playlist would allow us to enhance (rather than come to loathe and thereafter completely avoid) a significant game feature.

Hi guys,
I usually play with the radio off, but I turn it on eventually - which I have just done!
"Black Mountain Radio" is completely over the top; brilliant.
I listened over and over again and it was funny each time, heheh...
The performances are amazing - it's the guy who voiced my old friend Fawkes, he's really good.
And the best part is the songs. Big Iron...
So they've done good work on this.
Of course, Three Dog is a tough act to follow.

(excellent) ambiance music

Excellent ambiance music? I'd say it's more like crap. The 'songs' are so diverse they don't fit well together at all. They've taken some music from fallout 3, they've taken some kind of stalker-like dark and gritty music with a siren in the background and they've taken some completely all over the place random garbage music. If they'd stuck to either the fallout 3 songs or took some more of the gritty atmospheric stalker songs then I'd have said; AWESOME. But no, it feels like they just selected some random songs and threw em in there.

I remember hearing there were 25+ songs, but for some reason the radio only play 6 or 7 of them repeatedly.

I'm enjoying the game a lot, but they really fumbled the ball on the radio.

Too few songs.

Too few stations.

Too little voice work.

You even totally lose Black Mountain radio if you do certain things. I loved listening to Best Friend Tabitha.

I've since turned off the music and gone with the symphonic score, which is sorta like tuning into that old lady's violin playing when Three Dog got tedious.

I would seriously pay for (reasonably priced) Radio DLC. I'd love it if they'd hire Three Dog to do a 2281 show from the Capital Wasteland (ostensibly transmitted by satellite) that served as a sort of Fallout 3 epilogue, with familiar tunes and some new oldies.

And I cannot emphasize how much the charms of the song selections wear out quickly and invert from charming to obnoxious earworms.

~I got Spurs ...that Jingle Jangle Jingle...~ ... that's really cute, until you hear it for the third time in an hour or so of gameplay.

The Sinatra (I think?) song is weathering well, and the song I think New Vegas wears the best is that "Let's ride into the sunset together" one with the chick that sings "I'll be your cowgirl, if you'll be my cowboy."

It's a real shame they couldn't secure any rights to use Elvis songs, what with an entire gang of Elvis impersonators running around Freeside.

Hmmm i was thinking about this for a second.

Now lets see as of they spent a few months getting maybe 50 music...

Well that few months they took to make and get music would replace the data needed to add in parts of the game.

So its ethier music over quality, or Quality over music.

Don't even say the game is quality, if you do, you have not really played the game enough.

The game is larger then a sack of brahmin crap! No really!

If you have a 360, put some music on your hard drive. Doing so will let you put your own music into the game, meaning that (even if you turned on the radio) your music will basically negate the effect of ANY music in-game. A radio playin' in a bar? You won't hear it...at all.

Of course, stopping your music will return all of this back to normal (pausing it won't). Also, music stops momentarily during cinematics (in other games) or (I BELIEVE) during speech, at least that was the case with Fallout 3.

I mostly have to agree with Solid on this one. The background audio is way too diverse. Obsidian took both ambiance music from Fallout 3 and added ambiance sounds similar to the type of sounds that where played in the background of the old Fallout 1 & 2 games, which is quite interesting considering the fact that Obsidian consists of previous employees of Black Isle Studios. What I probably found most interesting regarding this topic is that the audio track you're referring to Solid; "some kind of stalker-like dark and gritty music with a siren in the background" is the exact sound clip that was used in the Van Buren Tech Demo. So I don't believe the audio was simply picked at random, I just feel Obsidian could have coded the audio a bit more effectively eg: Ambiance sounds in Caves & Vaults and Ambiance Music everywhere else.

I thought both Fallout 3 and New Vegas radio music was bad. I think it was just a bad selection to be honest with you. Its amazing how well Bioshock's (1) music fit with its setting. Those were some great tracks that I now listen to.

I prefer the ambient music in Fallout NV. Some of it is rather eerie.

A lot of the soundtrack (non-radio) music in Fallout NV is from Fallout 1 & 2, which is excellent.

I had a short playthrough for a while where every time I heard a country song, I went on a homicidal rampage and killed everyone in sight. I dislike country music, especially OLD country songs. There are so many old tunes that could have made it in. The guy I used to work with had some CDs with music from the 40's, 30's and such and everytime he played them, I couldn't help but to think of Fallout 3.

I think the songs get stuck in a loop... I found if you switch stations or turn the radio on and off the random track selector picks new songs to play.....
