Since New Vegas is not Fallout 4...

I too am going to need to start over from page one, and read up on what exactly is going on. Fallout 1 & 2 don't really appeal to me, like FO3 and now, NV. I'm pretty stoked for NV though, looks like it is going to be amazing!

Why not? Given that it was made by the same people, I wouldn't be surprised if they referenced the places and characters from Van Buren, especially Hoover Dam, even if the story is completely different.

They could, and they might. They might even bring in story themes from Van Buren but I'm leery of it. Mostly due to members of a certain forum who make fallout fans look bad who NEVER EVER STOP WHINING about losing their much beleoved Van Buren.

My point of centention being that, if it was never released, how do they know it would be the ultimite fallout game that they clame it would be?

uhm, I've been derealing myself with hate.

Uhm... So, who hopes that the PC will be able to join the BoS? I certainly do.

I'm not saying it would necessarily be the ultimate Fallout game. But I'd say it would at least be on par with Fallout 2. Why? From reading the 700+ page design documents that extensively describe all locations, quests etc.

I've SEEN the design docs. They're design docs. I've played the Tech demo.

If we were lucky it might be fallout 2 in 3D. But in the tech demo the combat had functioning turn based combat so it was a tad...unpleasant.

Granted this is like super early beta. But I'm just a tad irritated with people mentioning a game that never got off the bloody ground. The design docs ARE interesting though, I'll grant them that.

Gehenna for the win.

I doubt Obsidian is counting on the entire player base having played Fallout 1/2. I'm sure there will be plenty of history explained, and the player will likely be told everything they need to know about the New California Republic and other factions and material relevant to New Vegas that Fallout 1/2 players are already familiar with.

The tech demo does not have turn-based combat. It has real-time combat that is not even finished but a placeholder based on the Jefferson (Baldur's Gate 3) gameplay that also used the same engine. The final game was going to have both turn-based and real time combat modes, like Tactics.

Granted this is like super early beta.

It wasn't a beta. It was in pre-alpha state, which is a lot earlier than any beta. The design documents are actually more indicative of the final game than the tech demo in which most of the art and much of the gameplay was just placeholders put there to demonstrate how the engine works. And anyway, we're talking about the story of Van Buren being made canon, so the tech demo is not relevant here but the design docs are. And I think it would be reasonable to assume that when creating a new game they would assume locations, characters etc. that they themselves created to be a part of the universe, even if they did not appear in a published game.

I think it would be a mistake to assume that a Fallout game wouldn't take into account the canon story of the Fallout universe. Especially for myself, the universe is one of the things that keep me so interested. I love History, and essentially, delving into the Fallout universe is learning about the history of the series itself. It just so entertaining and awesome

I really agree with this theres nothing dumber tha plopmg someone down halfway throu a game, book, or movie and have them spend most of their time figuring out how they got to that point, without the backstory you have no frame of reference which is just bad for a plot, as for using things from vanburen does bethesda even have the rights to them?

Yes, Bethesda owns all the content of Interplay's Fallout games, both released and canceled ones. They even included some Van Buren stuff in FO3 already, as well as at least one thing from the also canceled Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2.

well since they own it i would assume they would a t leas keep some concepts but i really doubt that new vegas will closely follow vanburen's story

I'm not saying that they will follow the Van Buren story. Just that they might reference some of the factions, locations and characters they created for Van Buren.

Well, to divert off topic momentarily, I for one am extremely excited they are making a return to the NCR territories. It's classic Fallout, and as long as they keep the atmospheric detail of FO:3 then we should have something very reminicent of the original Fallout games. This has really piqued my interest and I am looking forward to more information being released more than I was when FO:3 was in development.

To me it just seems these days a title with a number after it now just seems to mean... "new game engine" Instead of part 3 or part 4. Games using the same engine get a fancy name after the title. Like GTA III... and then all the gta titles before 4 used the same engine.. I don't know if that's actually the case .. but it just seems to be.
Anyway here's the Fallout Timeline as stolen from the vault.
2141: Vault Dweller is Born
2161: Fallout 1 Begins
2162: Fallout 1 Ends .. vault dweller runs off to found Arroyo
2197: Fallout Tactics Begins
2198: Fallout Tactics Ends
2208: Fallout BOS Takes place.. (I never played this one so I have no idea what it's even about.)
2221: Chosen one is born - grandson of the original vault dweller
2241: Fallout 2 begins
2242: Fallout 2 ends - Weirdly enough I can't find a timeline for the Chosen one after that... he supposedly then founds the town New Arroyo and has a kid.
2258: Fallout 3 Lone Wanderer is born
2277: Fallout 3 Lone wanderer leaves the vault to chase down his father.
2278: Estimated end of fallout 3. ( works for me.. my last game save was 6.27.78)

As you can see Fallout 1 and 2 had a definite connection in that there is blood.. the Chosen One is the grandchild of the Vault Dweller
Fallout 3 has nothing to do with 1 and 2... Were more likely to run into the Chosen ones Son in New Vegas --depending on the timeline since the chosen ones son doesn't die until 2316. To me Fallout New Vegas seems more related to 1 and 2 then Fallout 3.
Not sure if were' allowed links but the whole think is on Fallout wikia under Timeline. Pretty interesting and makes me wonder more and more where they will stick the timeline of New Vegas.

this is what i read on the vault wiki i think...

fallout new vegas IS NOT Fallout 4, Fallout 4 is an independant project being made by Bethesda Game Studios

Fallout New Vegas is in my opinion a massive add on by the original Fallout developers, because the majority of Obsidian came from Black Isle which was shut down a while ago

So im guessing we can look forward to TES: V and Fallout 4 in the near future, BOTH BY BETHESDA GAMES STUDIOS

:whisper: :fallout: :disguise: :celebrate: :foodndrink: :celebration:

Fallout 2 is probably the most direct sequel in the Fallout Series seeing how you are a descendant of the main character of the original Fall Out and you are in roughly the same location... However, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are pretty much separate entities in which the past events of the FO1 and FO2 helped influence current events.

I really, really hope new vegas takes place between the end of fallout 2, and the beginning of fallout 3. that way we could take place in the war between the BoS and hoover dam thats tarts at the end of fallout 2. And mostly, that way we'd have a chance at meeting harold again before he roots.

its takes place a few years after FO3,

I have a worrying prediction that Fallout 4 won't exist until after the new Elder Scrolls(Which will probably be done on a better engine)

Fallout 3 is called such because it fallouts the same TIMELINE. Thats all. The others like Tactics and BOS dont, theyre just storys in random places in the storyline. Fallout 3 was an extension of the timeline from 1 and 2, as Fallout 2 was an extension of 1. Get it?

So Fallout:New Vegas, since its NOT Fallout 4, will probably be before the events of Fallout 3 at some point. Since the NCR very clearly has a flag and a trooper in the trailer, im assuming is after Fallout 2 but before 3. Probably while the Brotherhood was still on its way to the Capital Wasteland maybe?

FONV events happen 3-4 years after fo3
