Does silent running make that much of a difference?

I'm not even sure what it is... if anyone could clarify, is it when you moving fast in sneak mode rather than creeping slowly? Cuz that's still hella slow and isn't really running lol.

But yeah, does silent running make much of a diff if you had say, 100 sneak?

Basically my question, is 50 sneak + silent running the same as just having 100 sneak or what?

It makes a huge difference in the sense of you can sneak faster opposed to crawling on the floor hoping you don't get seen... so yes, I'd say it makes a difference.

Silent Running: Running no longer factors into a successful Sneak attempt.

right, but if you had 100 sneak and you were running, do they really sense you that much faster or farther away?

Just wondering if its really worth taking that perk over something else if I put 100 in sneak instead of 50+ silent running. I'm not looking to pick pocket or get "that" close. If you know what I mean, to enemies.

Yes, it makes an incredible amount of difference. Without the perk, if you start moving fast while crouched (running) even for a second, you become much less stealthy. But with the perk, no matter how fast you move, you will maintain your stealthiness. It's very, very useful, and if you plan on specializing in sneak this perk is practically a necessity.

This.

I'd recommend it if you plan on doing a lot of sneaking. :ninja:

Then no, as long as you keep your distance it's not going to make that much of a difference. It is extremely useful for sneaking in close proximity to an ememy though, since it effectively cancels out all of your footstep noise. Which means that the only way an enemy can detect you and enter [CAUTION] mode is if they have you in their direct line of sight.

The way I understand it is that the more you move the less well you sneak. Sitting still you are at your max sneak potential. With silent running, when you move I think your sneak rating is the same as if you were sitting still.

You can move around and still be undetectable without Silent Running. As long as you aren't moving faster than half of your maximum speed then you're generally alright. An enemy's Perception level plays a big part too. That's one thing Silent Running is always good for, sneaking near dogs. If you don't have Silent Running then dogs will go into [CAUTION] mode pretty sharpish whenever you're near them.

yeah, i mean if it really comes down to it I'll just move slowly. I'd rather have another perk than to just move faster if I can do it while moving slowly anyway. I mean, I'm mainly doing it just for gun sneak crits anyway.

Doin a gun build and working out the statistics for sneak crits, got a lot of left over points and a last perk to choose.

I've got 104 points left over with 95 lockpick, 90 speech, 90 science, 100 repair, 100 guns, 90 medicine, 45 melee, low survival//barter//energy weap//explosives//unarmed. Right now the sneak base will be 36 after I find all 4 sneak books. So I'm just messing around with what else I want. But my main thing here is, how much sneak do I want for this kind of build and do I need silent running. That's my main issue atm.

I don't get that with the dogs.

You would think that they would be able to detect you by their sense of smell and hearing.

Wild dogs and gaurd dogs should be pretty hard to sneak around, close by,even with a max skill.

Also it effects how "stealthy" you are with a weapon unholstered and the noise from equipped armor.

Try sneaking around wearing power armor and a mini gun equipped both with, and without, the perk to see the huge difference it makes.

Folks discuss stealth builds as if they're only good for pickpocketing. It's like, well, I'm just going to snipe baddies from a distance so I'll never need sneak.

Well, I guarantee you're going to have plenty, and I mean plenty, of indoor confrontations, and unless you're prepared to absorb damage, stealth becomes super useful.

My build is stealth/sniper. Outdoors, sure, it's distance and popping heads before they know I'm there. Indoors, though, it's still a matter of popping heads before they know I'm there, and that's done with stealth.

I mean, if you're upping your stealth anyhow, it's not going to be terribly useful outside, when you've got distance and angles to work with. Indoors, when you've got none of that, you're going to find Silent Running very useful.

Yeah but unless you've lost both arms and are trying to play the game with a club foot then it's pretty simple to just move slower.

Yeah I mean, indoor fights there won't be much sneaking going on. That's when the other part of my build will come in, the sneaking I just want for long range//medium range sneak crits. So far this is my build.

1. Intense training - +1 strength
2. Rapid reload
3. Educated
4. Run 'n gun
5. bloody mess
6. hand loader
7. shotgun surgeon
8. cowboy
9. quick draw
10. finesse
11. adamantium skeleton
12. jury rigging
13. better criticals
14. weapon handling
15. undecided - either silent running or something else

traits -
Small frame
built to destroy

str 4 / +1 implant , +1 intense training
perc 5 / +1 implant
Endurance 5
charisma 1
intel 10
agil 8 / +1 implant, +1 small frame
luck 7 / +1 implant

Armor increase implant

And so far for my stats I've worked out (as I hunt down all the skillbooks I need) that I'll have 139 skill points left over with 95 lockpick, 90 speech, 90 science, 100 repair, 100 guns, 90 medicine, 45 melee

I just don't know if its worth getting silent running over something like +1 to luck with intense training or something, or strong back.

What's the difference also if you have 50 sneak with silent running over 100 sneak with silent running? Just better chances of not getting caught i take it?

Yes, it makes a huge difference.

No, 50 sneak + Silent Running does not = 100 sneak.

If you don't have Silent Running then you have to barely push the joystick and just creep along, for sneak to be really effective.

With Silent Running, you can move as fast as you want and it will not effect your ability to sneak. If you are building a stealth type character, then Silent Running is absolutely crucial.
