Early on, the map seems tiny because you get railroaded south out of Goodsprings. However, at level 20, with 2 companions, it's really starting to open up because I can deal with most threats. The mountains in the NW are wonderful, if a bit linear. The western red rock canyons are better.
But there's still a lot of unused area around the borders of New Vegas. Areas that really need to be fleshed out with lots of little locations similar to how there were lots of little hidden spots around the edges of DC in Fallout 3.
