Explosives Skill

I made a thread about this if you want to search for it.

Basically, most explosives in this game are horribly nerfed. I have a pure demolitions based character, and quite frankly it is harder to kill tough enemies like Deathclaws on Normal than it is for my shotgun-only character to kill them on Very Hard. Worse though, is that to do so with explosives is far, far more expensive for no benefit except AoE on weak enemies (which still costs you tons more caps than just gunning them down or beating them to death in melee). I have no idea what the logic is behind the profound nerfing of raw damage behind stuff like the missile launcher and fat man, and the lower more "common" projectile explosives like the grenade launcher are crippled by the fact that they are incapable of critical hits (which not only do double damage or more but ignore a large portion of DT, which is why sneak criticals are so deadly against Deathclaws).

Late game demolitions involves hauling around 100+ lbs of explosives ammunition that costs thousands upon thousands of caps (C-4 and plasma mines/grenades in particular are INCREDIBLY expensive) for results that are less damaging than any other weapon skill in the game. Complete waste of time.

I also find explosives very weak in this game. Made a explosives char with all the explosive perks hit a mother death claw in the head with a mini nuke from sneak attack only took down 1/8th of her life. Just sad.

I also find explosives very weak in this game. Made a explosives char with all the explosive perks hit a mother death claw in the head with a mini nuke from sneak attack only took down 1/8th of her life. Just sad.

That's because of the base values (damage/radius):

165d / 2100u - Mini-Nuke
35d / 550u - 25mm
35d / 750u - 25mm HE
50d / 750u - 40mm
35d / 450u - 40mm Incendiary (plus 6 dmg/tick for 10 sec)
100d / 1300u - Missile (also HV)
100d / 1700u - Missile HE
200d / 256u - Securitron Missiles
250d / 512u - C4
75d / 192u - Powder Charge
100d / 192u - Frag Mine
200d / 256u - Bottlecap Mine
150d / 192u - Plasma Mine
75d / 300u - Dynamite (more powerful then a powder charge mine)
75d / 900u - Frag Grenade
500d / 1500u - Holy Hand Grenade
50d / 450u - Incendiary Grenade (plus 6/tick for 10s)
150d / 450u - Plasma Grenade

Some of the explosives just have too small of a sweet spot (due to damage tailing off as you get farther away from the explosion center) or they're not powerful enough in the first place (like the Fat Man's mini-nukes). If you wondered why power charge mines are so lackluster, it's because they have only a 192u radius and only 75 damage. Then there's the issue that no explosive can be set to be armor penetrating (not even the frag variants), so your explosives are always affected by armor.

Which is why I end up modding explosives in Fallout 3 and why I've modded the values in New Vegas. Bigger sweet spots and/or bigger booms to make them more useful.

See the ReadMe file for details on what values were changed. I'm mostly happy with the game balance, but there may still be a few things that I want to tweak. The 40mm Incendiary Grenades are now extremely useful and will kill regular Super Mutants as the flame effect ticks away. While testing, I tended to spend a lot of time using 40mm Incendiary ammo... or the extended range on the 25mm Grenade Machinegun was also a lot of fun to play with.

Science, the most important non-combat skill? EW ammunition crafting, conversation checks which are usually accompanied with a Speech option and terminals that are usually accompanied with lockpicks?

Am I missing something? I just buy and find the rarer ammunition(s).

Science is a really strong skill because:

It is a mean of access (door hacks, info hacks)
governs EW ammo recycling
crafts health items
has alot of skill checks.

a very well rounded skill. I think it is the only skill w/ that many applications.
