Sniper Rifle vs Anti-material rifle

Modded Sniper by a landslide for me.

Quieter, more convenient, easier to find/make ammo. The damage is more than enough to kill anything quickly and quietly.

The AM with the match grade ammo from the handloader perk owns all with the x1.15 Damage and the x0.65 Spread you can't have a stronger single shot than that.

Depends if you want super quiet or super loud, either way its pretty much always a one-hit shot from [HIDDEN], but the Sniper Rifle may take 2 or 3 shots on heavily armored enemy.

Those aren't the critical values, those are the criticals added in.

Ah, I see it. Now going by that format.

Brush Gun damage: 75
Brush Gun Critical damage: 150

Toss in the Cowboy Perk and HP rounds, or SWC hand loads, it becomes clear why there isn't a scope mod for it. I'm getting a DAM rating of 168 currently with the brush gun with HP ammo and 118 with SWC rounds. Playing around with it I shot Veronica, who is wearing T51B+Vault helmet for +28DT, with HP ammo in the chest and a single normal critical hit killed her while at max health on normal difficulty. That is at least 299 damage there (215+(28*3)), so a sneak attack to the head would yield 1,196 damage (299*2*2) with the same DT. Yeah, scope mod for the brush gun would make the AMR useless.

Point is the AMR and Sniper Rifle are not the hardest hitting guns in the game. If your are good with iron sights and are willing to abit get closer the Brush Gun is king, but it's massive overkill 99% of the time. For me the Trail Carbine with SWC rounds does the trick for everything that's not a deathclaw or sentry bot.

The thing is, the brush gun doesn't always crit. The sniper rifle does.

I use both Brush and SniperRifle. SR kills faster. (not considering sneaking) It's completely viable to be used as a close range weapon.

You are correct, Brush hits harder when you compare non crits. -->But here's the thing, SR is critting 100% of the time thus getting -Better Criticals- 100% of the time( and .308 JSP rounds add x1.5 Damage)

At the end the DPS is much higher unless you somehow boost Brush's crit rate to 40%~+

Make sure the first round fired is the only round needed. Long as you are [HIDDEN] when the trigger is pulled, and the enemy doesn't see the muzzle flash, the critical rate is 100%. This is true even with weapons that have a 0x critical multiplier.

See that's my problem right there. How is that fun? I am only level 17 but that is exactly what I am doing. Why would they make that gun so powerful and why should I have to not use it for balance? I just finished Black Mountain and I killed the end freak in about 2 or 3 shots to the chest from 5 feet away. These bad guys better level up or something. I found the game harder on normal than very hard.

Play on hardcoe. Most things kill me in one hit; if they get close or have a decent firearm, they cripple me like instantly. When you get crippled, you go into that animation for like 2 seconds, which is enough time for them to finish me off.

If one of those deathclaws actually got up to me, I probably would have died.

edit: it's probably hardcoe + small frame why I get crippled so fast, lol.

Firstly, as has been pointed out, after the first shot you will no longer be Hidden so you either have to back away till you're hidden again or fire with reduced DPS. Also 0x crit rates are for weapons that NEVER crit (i.e. no extra dmg), think you mean 1x.

I just sniped the entire Cottonwood Cove camp from about a mile away with the Anti-Materiel Rifle. I was watching the Legionaries through my scope and this is pretty much the description...

1. Shot fired
2. Bullet rips Legionarie's arm/leg/head off
3. Body flies 10 ft
4. Other Legionaries run over and panic
5. Go to #1

This went on until the entire camp was dead... They never fired a shot.

So yeah, naturally I'm a little biased towards the Anti-Materiel Rifle.

Again, overkill though- have done the same thing there with a sniper rifle, only skipping step 4, as I'm sure other's have.

Edit: though with a silenced sniper you can get away with much more and in tighter spaces. When I first bought the upgrades from 188 I sniped the entire population around 188 without anyone turning red - this was from about 10 feet away from each group.

Back in F3 for quite a while I was using both the Reservist's and Victory rifles close in, and there's no reason why you couldn't use the sniper rifle in FNV in the same manner (GRS is definitely your friend though).

I tend to do the bulk of my combat crouched anyway, and only go to my feet when I have to move quickly, and that does add to the potential of sneak criticals.

What I would like to see is a silencer for the Marksman Carbine...I've been using it lately and it's a great little gun. Kind of made my Cowboy perk a bit of a waste, but until I get some decent numbers of .45-70 ammo I'll stick with the marksman as primary weapon, .44 scoped as backup, and silenced sniper for the long ranged work. And the razor or hatchet for scraping the close up guys off my shirt front.

There's a mod for the silenced All-American (unique version of Carbine), as well as a mod for the silenced Gobi.

Anti-Materiel Rifle damage : 110.
Anti-Materiel Rifle crit damage : 190
Sniper Rifle damage : 62
Sniper Rifle crit damage : 124
Gobi Rifle damage : 60
Gobi Rifle crit damage : 120

The AMR may have a smaller crit multiplier but it almost does as much as the others do critting anyway and when it does crit it OHKs almost anything in the game (sneak attack). The fact is getting a sneak attack headshot with the AMR will OHK anything in the game but the legendary creatures.. AMR > Modded Sniper > Gobi > Unmodded Sniper.

Reaching 100% crit is pointless when sneak attacks give you that anyway which is what you will be getting with sniper rifles. The AMR one shot kills Deathclaws with a sneak attack, sort of makes everything else redundant.

EDIT: Wageslavez the AMR is nothing like the Barret. Its based off a French AMR.

The big problem is fire rate AMR rate of fire is so low unless you cheesing/or what to kill just 1 tough SOB you better of with any other sniper, as due to fire rate you losing more than 50% of you damage. Also Crits ignore DT so your doing more than 2x the dps with a sniper as the AMR (used GECK to work it out DPS of standard sniper is 2.2x that of the AMR).

Dunno if you find it in game but there one weapon that makes the AMR look like a pop gun it's The Disintegrator with 1K base damage per shot

There really is no competition. The AMR is one of, if not the best weapon in the game. And because of it's sheer power, it's usually just overkill for most of the creatures in the Mojave Wasteland and is usually reserved for sentry bots, deathclaws and things of that nature (+ FYI, with 90+ guns it makes short work of almost every creature in the game).

But, here's where the stock Sniper comes in - once modified with a suppressor and carbon fiber parts it becomes stealthier than the AMR at minimal cost (you can purchase both mods at Gun Runners, approx. 1K for both), thus making a great primary weapon to have, and the AMR becomes the secondary. This is slightly off-topic, but to be honest even the modded sniper is overkill for a lot of foes too (@ 100 gun skill it does about 66 damage per .308 round, w/ or w/o a silencer).

Both great weapons.

EDIT: @lawmanjoker: Something must be amiss there. The AMR does almost double the damage the Sniper rifle does.

Yah, I tend to use the rat slayer as my primary sniper rifle, switch to a slieneced sniper for multiple larger targets, and use the AM for single large targets

Just put my fully modded sniper rifle with JSP rounds and the AMR with AP rounds to the test against the Legendary Deathclaw last night. Don't know the math (first shots were sneak crits to the head) but here's my experience: AMR = died three times in a row because I couldn't get a second head shot off before he was on top of me. Decided to try my trusty sniper rifle= First shot crushed him, it took him a couple seconds to find me by that time second shot lined up BLAM dead. Two shots. I'm not sure if the second was crit because I was so panicky thinking it was going to go down like the AMR. I'm assuming it was. So for me, seeing as my Sniper Rifle with JSP rounds one shots everything else in the game, is quiet and weighs about an eight of the AMR, the Sniper Rifle wins.
