This Machine Kills Deathclaws!

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:59 pm

...Cass with a Riot Gun helps a bit too. ;)

I've seen a lot of new, lower level players complain that Deathclaws are too deadly, and experienced, high level players talk about how easy it is to sneak and snipe them...

I just wanted to let everyone know, you can kill them the cowboy way too!

I'm lvl 20 with a sneak skill of 19. Most of my weapons have levers. None of my weapons have scopes. AND, I only shoot hand loaded ammo.

I'm shooting hand loaded .308s , of course, and Cass is shooting 12 ga buckshot mags. I had to relax my no VATS rule (the first three shots are VATS), and we can't take more than two at a time, BUT man is it a HOOT.

I just bought a Brush Gun, which I think will eventually do even better (it's DPS is over 200 with the cowboy perk) but gov't hollow points just bounce off Deathclaws! :( Hand loaded ammo is the key, poeple... ;)

So, who else kills Deathclaws WITHOUT sniping them?

You don't use HP bullets on DCs! They have a lot of armor.

Get a sneak attack with hollow points from the Brush Gun. The 100DT the deathclaw will have might as well be tissue paper. Otherwise load up the SWC hand loads.

last week they had 35...So 15 this week? Ok, Brush gun just got more awesome against these things. Maybe why there is no scope mod, or hardly any ammo, for it when compared to the AMR.

When I was playing with the brush gun a single standard critical hit to the torso killed Veronica while wearing T51b power armor and a helmet for 28DT total.

Heh... With a 19 sneak, I'm not getting any criticals.

Semi-wad cutters FTW! :D

I've had better luck with Armor Piercing rounds-- lot's of 1 shots.

Also 12 gauge Coin Shot shells. Something nice and wasteland-y about using scrounged money for shrapnel. Like bottle cap mines....

Guns are for cowards. I just use my super sledge hammer to bash the brains of my enemies.

My character has a Str of 6 and an Unarmed skill of 20, but Pushy is my weapon of choice against Deathclaws. (Or just about anything else for that matter.)

My next character will specialize in Unarmed, and I'm going to grab Pushy as soon as possible.

I just went through the quarry, and cleared it out with knock knock(unique fire ax) That thing is totally badass, but yes This Machine is my favorite gun in the game. I used it exclusively once acquiring it with my previous two playthroughs. My current playthrough is all melee/unarmed, and I was scared as hell about deathclaws at first, but with the right weapon, armor, and chems the quarry can be done by a melee character.

Chance's Knife with Cowboy at 50 melee. And I don't really get why people have trouble with Deathclaws...

Deathclaws DO have high DT, but if you run the math on it, you'll see that Hollowpoint rounds are still the most damaging, at least for weapons with very high DAM.

If This Machine had a scope, I would build my whole character around that gun.

HP rounds triples their armor!

You've gotta use SWC Hand Load for deathclaws.

HP rounds on Deathclaws is a badddd idea. Hand Load FTW.

As for taking down Deathclaws now that I have gotten used to them in my first playthrough and on my 2nd I have found that the ranger sequoia wth Hand Load rounds is nothing less than pure amazing. Imma try to take out the legendary deathclaw with it just to make a point. Though its prob gonna take a 100+ tries.

No, really, it works. I don't know if it's better than hand-loaded, but HP is better than base ammo, even against highly-armored deathclaws, as long as you're using a weapon with high DAM.
It triples their Damage threshold, yes, but it also increases damage by 75 percent. Do the math.

JohnQEvil, on 04 November 2010 - 11:01 AM, said:
Hey, that list gives me an idea.

.45-70 HP in a brush gun vs. a Deathclaw:

DAM: 75*1.75 = 131.25
DT: 15*3 = 45
Final DAM: 86.25

.45-70 SWC Brush vs. Deathclaw:

DAM:75*1.15 = 86.25
DT: 15-3=12
Final DAM: 74.25

This means HP ammo still does more damage in a high damage gun vs. a higher DT target than the equivalent AP round.

Here you go. EDIT: This may not actually be correct, according to the wiki's combat damage formula.

See below if you want a no brainer way to put packs of deathclaws down without using any sneak at all. In fact, this solution is face to face.

Spoiler
12 gauge shotgun with beanbag shot puts them on their back for a long enough time to kill them while they lie there. I've put 3 of them down on the ground while my party then trounces them one by one. This is so overpowered I simiply couldn't believe it when I first tried it as it makes the dartgun in FO3 look like a challenge. I think you do need to shoot them in the face/head, not the body for the shot to work.
