Super mutants?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 3:46 pm

Maybe its just me but i really wish there were more pockets of super mutants around fnv (jacobstown aside). In fallout 3 they were all over the place, i know its a different setting but if they can survive in a city then they can in a desert. Although i havent found every location on my plays yet (refuse to take explorer perk) i didnt see any super mutant behomeths, please say that there is at least one as the thought of one coming around a canyon or mountain is too cool not to be in the game?

The Super Mutants in FNV are a different breed than the ones in FO3. They're intelligent rather than savage, so they don't tend to just wander around and kill everyone they see. The ones at Black Mountain did so because they were ordered.

It's not a matter of survival, it's a matter of FEV. Mutants have no way to replenish their numbers without FEV. The only FEV in the west that we know of is in the ruins of Mariposa, which is deep within NCR territory. Consequently, we're not going to see huge armies of mutants like we would back east.

Also, there are no behemoths, and this is a good thing, because behemoths are an inherently inane concept that shouldn't even exist.

Exactly this. With the amount they'd have to eat to sustain that size, there wouldn't be a living thing for miles.

Yeah.. it's not so much that there are less super mutants around, just that they tend to be more concentrated and smarter. The mutants were spread all over the DC Wasteland to bring back humans to convert into more mutants, and 'green stuff' to use to convert them into mutants...

Men and women turned into mutants retain some of the gender traits....FO 2 and I think FO 1 had some examples of this.

They are neuter when they're mutated.
But they (at least the Mariposa ones) retain memories of their past lives.
The Vault 87 muties... FEV must be at a different concentration or something. Those muties come out bigger, stronger, and stupider. They don't remember their lives much.

For example, Lily was a 75 year old grandma who just barely poked her head out of her Vault when she was snatched by muties and changed to a Nightkin for the Master's army.

All Super Mutants on the West coast are the product of the Master, since he's long dead, the FEV source he used is long destroyed also and His army has been defeated and was actively hunted by BoS and just about everyone else out there. These an understandably small supply of them to go around. If yo uwant to go back to Super mutants being the main bad guy I would suggest playing Fallout 1. :P

Not so much. There's two generations of Mariposa-derived muties. The first gens (and Nightkin, which are another breed in the same generation) who were produced by the Master. These are folks like Marcus, Neal, and probably most of the muties in Broken Hills in FO2. The second gen super mutants, however, were produced by the Enclave accidentally, when the FEV fumes from their excavation of Mariposa in Fallout 2 infected their workforce. Second generation muties are dumber than first gens (due to uneven/uncontrolled FEV exposure?), but also significantly more numerous since they haven't had more than a century to be hunted to near extinction.

Tabitha's radio show is actually pretty informative on this matter.

Whether there will ever be a third generation of muties, I dunno. Mariposa is deep within NCR territory, so it's possible. Especially if elements in the NCR decide that the ends justify the means and start dipping people.
