Is Camp Searchlight a Return of the Living Dead reference?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:58 am

Okay. Certain things about the whole event at Camp Searchlight don't make sense to me, and really I need dev input for this answer. Was the whole thing supposed to be an extremely vague RotLD reference with the canisters representing Trioxin 2-4-5, thus semi-explaining the instant ghoul thing? Or is it just a canon-twister in regard to ghouls?

What do you think is so "canon-twister" about it? Ghouls are created by heavy radiation.

Edit: Apparently according to the wiki it takes months or years. So that is somewhat unique.

Ghouls have traditionally been created via long-term exposure to moderate levels of radiation. The process is slow, jarring, and drawn out.

I think the majority opinion in that is "why couldn't she just die in the fire with everyone else?".

It really made no sense past a generally failed attempt at humor.

The rest of Fallout 3 is pretty good with ghouls in presenting it as a long-term thing. Underworld and the metro handled it traditionally.

This reminds me of the die-ary from the nuclear test site :nuke:, anyway there was never a explanation why most people die because of radiation and some transformed to ghouls. Not to mention why some are civilized for hundreds of years while others going nuts after a few weeks. The guy at Dunwich Building in FO3 had also a quick transformation.

Actually, if you explore the area thoroughly, you will learn that the whole deal took a pretty long time, maybe some months. Legion had a mole leaking the stored waste first, then opened an attack which led the NCR to scatter or hide in the irradiated city. Under siege they had no chance but to stay, and the waste didn't actually help them.

Really? I understood it as the Fire House having been had it stored there for a while, then they opened the barrels and just let time do it's thing. But I suppose it WOULD explain the armed turrets.

Truth be told, I only stumbled close to Searchlight once, and do to my fear of zombies in any representation, I give Camp Feral a wide berth. :cryvaultboy:

No, you're right.
Spoiler
They opened the can under orders from Vulpes Inculta without knowing what was inside. Hence the pile of Legion corpses in the firehouse garage.

Im also quite curious about what happened at Camp Searchlight
Spoiler
In my hunt for the unique Fire-Axe Knock Knock i stumbled across a large number of logs and other assorted story goodies but couldn't find anything in reference to dates and/or time in them. Also Im curious as to how some of the troopers went entirely feral while other ones apparently can wield knives but for whatever reason still attack you.

Camp Searchlight looked to be a pretty good stronghold for the NCR for a time. However, their supplies were getting robbed by the Legion via Nipton. You also find out the patrols around Searchlight were not very good, and there were plenty of holes. The Legion exploited that by sneaking some soldiers in and having them open up the cannisters of radioactive waste (of some sort). One of the logs mentions that there was a truck or two of waste in the firehouse, and another was routed to Cottonwood Cove (you have the ability to open the cannisters onto the cove, actually). One of the ghouls (pvt Edwards) mentions that everybody became ghoulified thanks to the 'radiation bomb' or something. He must have been protected enough not to become feral, I suppose.

As for the Return of the Living Dead reference, perhaps, but there is a better one at the Old Nuclear Test Site, where you find "Trash" and her die-ary entries. IIRC, Trash was the crazy goth chick obsessed with death in the RoLD movie.
