My type of PC for FO: NV

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:52 am

Hello, I don't know if this is the appropriate section of this forums to post this topic in, but I was wondering what kind of computers or laptops Fallout players have and play with.
Also I have read before that if you don't have a good graphics card with a decent amount of dedicated memory I practically wasted money on a computer that has a good processor, good amount of RAM etc.
Well anyways put down your responses, I'll be sure to reply. Thank you

I'm running the game on a system with an ATI4870gt and 4 gig of DDR2, grossly bottle-necked by a GA-8i945GMF motherboard with Pentium D 2.8 processors.
Runs really well out in the overworld, but it bogs right up in places where there are a lot of NPCs milling about.

Wow nice, how much amount of dedicated memory of the graphics card do you have, or do you have none? Also do you mind explaining the term "bottle-necked" to me? Lol please and thank you.

I have AMD Phenom II Quad core 3.40GHz, XFX Radeon 5850, 4 gig dual channel RAM and the game runs perfectly with high fps on ultra-high settings.

I object to your poll because I'm not rich, I saved up for 4 years (all that time using second hand or cast-off PCs) to buy components for a new build.

Sorry if I offended you in any way with my poll. I just assume that people are rich with their high end computers because I am just simply jealous of them, and you.

My graphic card memory capacity is 1024mb.
According to wikipedia, in terms of a bottleneck in engineering;
"In engineering, a bottleneck is a phenomenon by which the performance or capacity of an entire system is severely limited by a single component. The component is sometimes called a bottleneck point. The term is metaphorically derived from the neck of a bottle, where the flow speed of the liquid is limited by its neck."

It is not entirely accurate in my case, but my more then adequate video card (which has 1024mb on-board) and RAM is held back by aged under-performing motherboard and CPU when it comes to games that rely on high processing speeds.

2.4Ghz duo core, w/6 Gig of RAM, and a 512 meg nVidia GeForce GT9600...game is installed on a 500 Gig high speed external drive.

No game released in the last 18 months has given it graphics or performance problems, except FNV. And that isn't the rig's fault...they came in with the Broken Steel release for F3.

I've had to strip the graphic card's higher end features down for FNV to keep it running more or less stable - Ditched HDR, ditched trilinear filtering, and dropped pre-rendered frames from 6 to 4. Seems to have worked for most of the graphics issues, except if I fast travel to certain places, and then we go into the time warp....

Boot to the Head is running New Vegas at 1600x1200 nearly maxed(Only things turned down are shadows and AA). It's packing an XFX 8800GS 384MB bought from a folding machine partou, a 20 dollar socket 939 dual core with one pin replaced with a bit of bread tie wedged into the socket, four gigs of brand new G.Skill DDR400, running Windows Vista RTM from a 120GB IDE drive and all other software from a 1TB Greenpower yanked from a MyBook and mounted internally.

I never dip below 20FPS.

Actually I've seen as high as 85 before. It depends on where I am and what my hard drives are doing. If I'm in an interior cell it's usually always 50 or above because the harddrives don't have to constnatly load things. If I had to put a number on an average I'd say 35. Plenty fluid enough to play in free-aim all the time.

That being said I haven't actually started the game with the latest patch. It may get even better. I hear the dll fix isn't needed with V1.1.
