I had no qualms with steam...

So yeah, Fallout New Vegas is all I imagined and hoped for, with it's wonderfully written quests and great atmosphere.
I wanted to see how awesome my character looked from farther third person so I opened up the console and typed "tfc". Later I was doing a certain quest and was looking all over a certain town to find a door, I decided to type "tcl" into the console to fly over to the door that without flying I could just walk to. I later obtained Rex and he was dying too quickly so I decided to look up how to set him essential on the wiki. I saw a warning that stated that I would be unable to obtain achievments if I used any of them. It quickly came to mind that that is the reason I did not get the level 10 achievment, because I wanted to fly over some cars rather than around them and because I wanted to look at my character.
I am now distraught that I am unable to obtain the special reward for completing the game in hardcoe mode, and that is the only one I really care about. Before I go about setting rex essential and trying to look at my character some more, how would I go about keeping this character and still obtaining the special reward? Is there no solution?

And a side question: How do I edit my characters face without ruining my perks? His face is too wide to fit some head items.

edit: Another question: Do some mods ruin your ability to get achievments like the console does?

Revert to a save from before you used console codes? Being as it's use of console codes that disabled the achievements, seems pretty straightforward.

Steam is the platform that handles the achievements.

Speaking of which, AFAIK the console only disables achievements during that session.

I don't know about the hardcoe achievement though. We'll have to see about that one.

I had progressed into the game too long after I used tfc and tcl.

You have a point there...

How about, you know, not cheating via the console? I frankly don't care how one chooses to play their game, but if you're trying to cheat AND get a reward that is given out for NOT cheating, well then...

I know it's a bummer that Rex dies too quickly in hardcoe mode, but if you really want him to tag along but keep him out of danger, just tell him to wait in a safe location when you think you're about to get into a fight.

On occasion I've found myself needing to TCL out of glitched terrain. Or sometimes fix a quest that didn't fire properly with sqs and setstage.

From the console: showracemenu

Again, though, this might kill achievements if you decide to go back to an old save to fix your achievement problem.

I think achievement only disabled for that session, just quick save and then quit the game. Load the quick save and achievement should be enabled again.

I don't think either of those commands ruins the hardcoe achievement for you. I've had to use the console to fix or work around a couple of bugs myself and I still got the hardcoe achievement when I finished the game.

EDIT: I stand corrected about how console commands and achievements work. Still, I think it's kind of dorky for someone to ask us "Hey guys, how do I cheat and still get this particular award?"

If you use console commands you cannot attain any achievements until you've rebooted your game. I've used tcl a few times after getting stuck and the console save command and I still get achievements - although if I use commands I would need to close and re-launch the game. (I missed a few quest related achievements because of this but I've gotten most of them, including the one for completing the game in hardcoe.)

In the normal game companions can't die, only get knocked unconscious. Part of hardcoe mode is the fact that companions can die so if you want the achievement it looks like you can't cheat by reducing the challenge. In FO3 I found companions could be a bit of a chore and would set them as essential. In FONV I tried hardcoe with my first character and even though I used Arcade Gannon he didn't require much babysitting.

This I agree with, but the OP is griping because he cannot get an achievment award after what amounts to cheating, I don't give a hoot about achievments personally, but it really gets my back up when people complain they cannot get awards via cheats.

All you need to do is restart the game and you can get achievements again.

When exactly was I actually cheating?

Look at it as an exercise in restraint. If you want the achievements then you have to resist the urge to play with the console. I like to take screen shots with out the hud showing. I often tm the menus off when I find a really nice scene to record.

I had to replay 'come fly with me' three times before I got the achievement. Now I make sure to reload the game before I finish critical quests.

You said you wanted to set Rex to essential. IE make him unkillable in hardcoe mode, where the whole idea is that it's harder BECAUSE companions are killable... and then still collect the hardcoe mode achievement.

The point is that I never actually used that console command, yet I am still unable to get achievements (unless what all of the helpful posters are saying is true, which it probably is).

Also your companions earn YOU xp when they kill something.

I've used console commands (tcl and save) and gone on to get achievements. As I said before after using console commands you need to close the game and then relaunch it if you want to start getting achievements again although it's possible some effects (let setting a companion essential) will disrupt this fully since it's an ongoing effect.

Thanks to this thread for answering that question for me (although I wasn't losing any sleep over it. I've always thought achievements were kinda lame and a lollipop to console gamers who couldn't mod the game or tweak it with the command line.) I couldn't understand how I missed all those achievements—even the ones for leveling up (Duh.)

Considering the game is so fragile at this stage, I'm in the Console all the time.

Yeah. In FO3 i had a script to make all the caravans and important NPCs and companions Essential (especially Dogmeat—keeping him alive was a full-time job.) I was relieved in NV when I didn't have to do that.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to make sure you don't choose "Done" after using the ShowRaceMenu command. Then quit the game witht he console still open. Otherwise you lose all your Perks

Yep, you should definitely be able to get the hardcoe achievement even if you use consoles (provided you exit to desktop and restart the game). I got the achievement just fine despite having used the console plenty of times in that playthrough (mostly to fix broken quests and find lost companions and NPCs, etc.)
