What is the lore on Power Armor and sneak?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:30 am

Can you effectively sneak in power armor? I know you can in game as soon as you get silent running but I wanted to know how it was in lore...I am guessing power armor does the work for you as far movement goes so I cant see why not right?

As long as you squat, people can't see you.
Walking around the radiated Mohave has damaged the lower halves of everyone's eyes and they can only look down if they bend their neck down 120 degrees.

And years of firing guns without proper ear protection has made people partially deaf, so they can't hear the loud clanking of Power Armor boots

Yup, not a chance. Power Armor is designed to make soldiers walking tanks, ability to move undetected is propably not a feature of it's design. It's the Hei Gui Stealth Armor that makes people invisible. Except the New Vegas version :D

And since it has hydraulics that assist movement, it's going to make noise.

So? It does work for you, but it does that work very loudly. It's like handing off your job of calling numbers at a bingo hall to Gilbert Godfrey.

Power armor was not made for stealth, period. It was made to keep the stuff inside of it alive instead of dead when the **** hits the fan.

Yeah, someone already mentioned it, but Power Armor involves hydraulics, which would basically be the least sneaky thing you could possibly add to a suit of armour, except maybe bells.

The lore on Power Armor is the same as many people have said here: Of course it's not stealthy, it's a tank minus the treads and makes similar noise levels.

The in-game reality is that no developer has ever successfully added more than token "-Agility" penalties, and with a high enough Sneak skill you can sneak a rattling, clanking, fusion-powered hydraulic tank up on just about anything.

Huh? This isn't true at all. Light level, your armor weight, your movement speed, and your Sneak skill are all factors used in calculating your 'hidden' status.

I think the only reason sneaking in power armor works is because NPC's see you trying and put their heads in their hands in disbelief ;)

You suppose to strip the outer plating of your power armour if you prefer sneak......

Tell it to the Deathclaw I crept up on in full daylight wearing Enclave Hellfire Armor in Fallout 3, with no Stealth-Boy.

Yeah, that's a good point. The Recon Armor is, after all, the under-armor to the Power Armor.
