shoddy AI with an aged oblivion engine

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:30 pm

its doing my head in now this silly oblivion engine. four years out of date. i love the game, but im sick to death of people getting svcked into the ground, people sitting in fresh air next to chairs and my VATs shots going inexplicable wayward. i love the game, but its clearly a DLC. i think we deserve more. why on earth the game makers felt the need to give us a straight port of a deeply enjoyable, but flawed 2008 game is baffling. plus, why they felt the need to carry on fallout 3 when the most of us wanted a new oblivion, is genuinely beyond me.

Obsidian developed Fallout New Vegas, not Bethesda. Perhaps Bethesda Game Studios is working on a new Elder Scrolls game, there's an official TES V speculation thread in the Elder Scrolls Series forum if you wish to discuss this.

New Vegas was made by Obsidian, TES games are made by Bethesda. This isn't an either/or situation, the making of New Vegas was not instead of a TES game.

Not to add fire to the flame of this thread, but your last question is pretty easy in my mind. Fallout New Vegas is like a giant expansion to FO3 - contract out development to a third party and using an existing engine, textures and meshes. Its a marketing coup - they'll make a lot of money off a small investment and effort (on the Bethesda's developers end that is). I have a feeling this gives them time and revenue to concentrated on ES V and hopefully make it the game we've been waiting for.

Few things.

its doing my head in now this silly oblivion engine.
four years out of date.

It's the Gamebryo engine and the current incarnation is not that old.

i love the game, but im sick to death of people getting svcked into the ground, people sitting in fresh air next to chairs and my VATs shots going inexplicable wayward.

Been around from Morrowind. I'd like to see them gone too.

i love the game, but its clearly a DLC.

How? New story, new characters, new locations, new mechanics, DLCs don't always have all of those. One or two yes, all of them no.

i think we deserve more.

On what basis do you 'deserve' something?

why on earth the game makers felt the need to give us a straight port of a deeply enjoyable, but flawed 2008 game is baffling.

Nobody wants a new Oblivion. We do want a new Elder Scrolls though.

The engine doesn't make the game, other factors contribute to that. There are games that are at least 15 to 20 years old which today are still enjoyable compared to games that have been released in the past four or five years . . .

On that note, bring back whatever engine was used for Fallout and Fallout 2. :D

there are modern incarnations of the original fallout engine. infact, there is a fallout 1/2 MMORPG. i don't know the rules of this forum but google search it. the game itself is incredibly fun yet hardcoe.

Support for modern resolutions, a bit reworked UI, possibly a little larger sprites, and it's pure gold  And the time i last played Fallout was 40 minutes ago :D

Of course my extremest opinon is that no FPS needs to look better than classic doom :D Running on 1366x768 or 1024x768 resolution.

I agree on everything you said before this, but I loved this one the most. lol I kinda want them to remake Morrowind though, it could be better now graphic wise and I liked how the sky was truly the limit in that game.

this thread makes me want to blurt out the name of the fallout MMORPG but im almost positive that would result in an instant and permanent banstick to the face. if you still play the originals you are doing yourself a disservice by not playing the MMORPG.

Not "still", for the first time actually :D And i doubt it, since you have to deal with *shudder* people in MMORPGs :cold:

I don't know. If I had a choice between having a new Fallout game and a new Elder Scrolls game, I'd pick Fallout every time. Don't get me wrong. I like The Elder Scrolls, it's just that Fallout is way too much fun. It doesn't really attempt to take itself seriously whereas The Elder Scrolls does.

If you have the PC version, look for the Morrowind Graphics Extender (try the Morrowind mods section on these very forums) - does exactly what you suggest and makes it look graphic wise like a brand new release. No need for the game to be remade.

Um, if New Vegas was a straight port from Fallout 3, then we would have seen the same sort of level scaling (which is not in New Vegas) as in Fallout 3, the same weapon/armour repair system (which has definately been tweaked in New Vegas), No Traits (which yet again were in New Vegas), the same perk per level rate (which once more was altered in New Vegas (to the better in my opinion)) and countless other bits and bobs which have been added/removed/tweaked from Fallout 3.

Don't be so quick to speak for everyone. While Elder Scrolls is their flagship series, Fallout has become their biggest and most popular series.

Woah, careful! Some of the folks in this forum might try to skin you alive for that comment. You know, the ones that want Fallout to adopt all the elements of the Elder Scrolls.

I'm kinda sick of all these whiny topics. We get it, the engine is from 2006 and it is showing it's age. And it has obvious issues now that it is being pushed harder than it was meant for (ex - a dozen deathclaws on the screen at once). My favorite is when people say "the engine was from 2001 and was used in morrowind!" because they have no idea what they're talking about. Game engines evolve.. source is the quake 1 engine modified. Bioshock was built on unreal 2.5, not 3. CoD:Black Ops which is the current 'it' game is built on the Quake 3 engine.

When NV was announced, it was revealed to be a spin off in the vein of Vice City based on FO3 assets/engine and developed by Obsidian (who is made up of some of the black isle guys that did the original FOs). We've known this for nearly two years. It svcks there is a lot of bugs, but even black ops has it's share of bugs. Because of multi platform releases and deadlines, that is the kind of thing happening. And by the time timmy gets it in his stocking, the major things will be taken care of

It's a great game, the bugs are annoying though, and having some game vs nothing while waiting for the next ES game is something. I'm personally not a TES fan, it bores me, I'll take FO any day of the week even if it's still this same engine (but rest assured this is the final game to use it)
