Thoughts on getting Xbox controller for PC

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 8:10 pm

Ok well, i had Oblivion and Fallout 3 for Xbox 360, they were great. I also bought Oblivion for PC maybe a year after release. It was doing this that caused me to get New Vegas for PC, and i do not regret it. However i still respect the console version for what it offers, and occasioanlly i kind-of miss it.

So i have a thought, should i purchase one of the Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers for PC? They are only £20 odd pound, and could really benefit the fps aspect of the game. A couple questions though;

- When i play on a higher-than-normal graphic setting for my laptop, i get a bit of lag and delay with movement functions. Would this still be just as bad for a controller?
- I have 3 Xbox 360 wireless controllers, is there any way to set one up for my laptop?

yea they have a adapter for pc/laptops for using a x-box 360 controler. but they only work for GFWL not WL if im right why one of the reasons i didn't get FONV for the pc becouse i read that this new fallout wasn't for GFWL just WL and i think my video card is old and couldn't play FONV on the highest graphics settings.

I would assume that your input lag will be the same with a controller.

Also, it comes down to what you're comfortable with, of course, but it isn't possible to get the level of precision with any kind of controller that you will get with a mouse and keyboard. There's just no comparison. That's really the #1 reason why I still game on a PC vs. consoles.

This is pretty much why I can't get into console shooters.

It feels like I'm only sort of in kind of control of my character trying to run and aim with dual anolog sticks.

That said, there are adaptors out there, it's just a matter of treating the buttons as keypresses and binding those keypresses to things you use in-game.

Thankfully FO:NV has a very console-friendly control setup, you know, being a console-available game and all, it only uses like 6 keys and two mouse buttons.

Of course. If the machine can't render the graphics fast enough and bogs down, it bogs down no matter what you're controlling the action with.

I seem to agree with all of you, i do understand the accuracy of using a mouse, and i dont want to stray from that, i'd just like to feel that i have an alternative. I think i could enjoy using both. I have used consoles for games far more than pc (still play halo, call of duty, oblivion, fallout 3) and i feel more comfortable using one.

I also have the xbox 360 wireless reciever for WiFi use. Would this work with my PC? I may give it a go.

If not, do i just need to buy a receiver.? The PC receiver by microsoft is £15, when a controller with one is only £18. I have 3 controllers, it would be nice to find a cheap alternative to the sole receiver and use my xbox ones.

If I recall correctly the X360 uses USB inputs, so in that case it's just a matter of having the proper software installed to understand what the input from the USB port means, I'm sure it's out there.

And in the end it is what you are most comfortable with. I've been using keyboard and mouse since DOOM came out, and my first console shooter was Halo... I'm way more accurate with a mouse.

On the other hand a gamepad is also far better for your body in terms of RSI.

I played FO3 with my 360 controller sometime ago and it didn feel right somehow,i though it would be better as i am mainly a 360 gamer and i love the controller, but truth be told, the current gameplay mechanics are obviously better on a keyboard and mouse.

The Games for Windows certification is supposed to mean that the game supports Xbox controllers out of the box without any fiddling with mappings. Fallout 3 did, but I haven't tried it with New Vegas yet. I use the wireless 360 receiver (not to be confused with a wifi adapter) with my HTPC and wireless 360 controllers and they work great with most games.

The controller (wireless 360, in my case) works great on this title, the only thing you lose is the precision, as has been mentioned. But since this is more RPG than fast-paced shooter, imo, it works well for me.

The controller works the same in F:NV (WL) as it did in F:3 (GFWL).

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows-Pc/dp/B000HZFCT2 is the specific receiver you (OP) need. It also comes in http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Black/dp/B0032A0RBC/ref=sr_1_cc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1290127179&sr=1-1-catcorr.

The game detects it when the controller is on and works right out of the box.

Yep, that's the one I have. Word of warning, though, don't un-plug these while the computer is on. There's a fuse inside them that likes to blow when you do that. I went through three of them before I found out you can crack them open and bypass the fuse with a dot of solder.
