Melee Weapon Mods

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:27 pm

It's a shame that the emphasis in this game is so much on guns, with all the different (craftable) ammo and the weapon mods and stuff. The only thing melee weapons have is poison. I was thinking there could be melee weapon mods, somehow.

I was thinking a Chainsaw mod, with upgraded blades or something.

Any thoughts on this?

Well, I honestly was hoping for a Blade sharpener for Knives/Swords, A Blunt thing you could attach to the sledge, A Electrical Mod for the Balistic fist/Unarmed weapons and etc.

I was actually expecting whetstones to be able to sharpen blades this time around. Oh silly Momaw. Someday I'll learn that the proper way to sharpen a knife is using another knife. <_<

Come to think of it. Some guns have mods that make them weigh less, why can't Melee weapons have that?

I don't see how you could, Unless you replace the hilt with a different kind of wood/metal.

That's exactly what they do to the guns. Like replacing metal parts with carbon fibre (sniper rifle)

Meh, carbon fibre parts would do fine for most high end weapons since they are made of metal.

The thing is that most melee weapons are all-or-nothing propositions. Some firearms have mods that make them lighter... by replacing a *part* of the firearm. They are complex machines with many parts. A knife... How are you going to make it lighter, except by making it out of titanium or something, which is not a "mod" but rather an entirely different tool. So. It's hard to make mods for most melee weapons because you're not changing parts, you're either replacing the entire thing with something similar, or you're machining and carving on the thing.

But. Some suggestions that would make sense:

Fiberglass handle: For fire axe, hatchet, and sledgehammer. Reduces weight, and increases durability.
Barbed wire: For baseball bat. Increases damage.
Lead washer: For knives and combat knives. Slightly reduces damage, but substantially increases speed.

Potential viable mods for melee weapons:

Mercury-filled head (mercury moves with the momentum of the blade enhancing force, same principle those water-filled novelty bats used)

Weighting

Counterbalancing (faster swing speed)

electrostatic generator (adds EMP effect)

the list is a lot bigger than you'd think, even without Fallout superscience.

Maybe energy mods would be cool too, like the shiskebob? It would be cool if something like that was in Dead Money.
