What's this number in my pipboy?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 12:50 pm

Hey there, thanks for reading.

I've been looking for the answer to a very simple question, yet I cannot find it anywhere.

When selecting a weapon in my pipboy, it shows the list of weapons on the left and statistics plus an image on the right.
Now, left of the image (in the middle of the pipboy, both horizontally and vertically) it shows an icon showing the weapon type.
Next to that icon it also shows a number - often 0, 25, 50 ...

What does this number mean?

Thanks in advance,

tcdj

It means the required SP level, Gun/Energy Weapons/ Melee/ etc, that you need to fully operate it without decreasing its potential. The icon represents the Skill required, you can compare the icons by looking at the Icon by the Gun and then the Skills in your Pip-Boy/Girl to correlate them.

The skill level required to use the weapon optimally. You can still use the gun if your skill is lower, but your accuracy (guns, energy weapons, explosives) or speed (melee unarmed) is reduced.

Edit:  Triple ninja'd? Must be a new record :celebration:

Now, if you're like me, you will try out all the weapons that you are far too low to use properly. Trying to get a head shot at distance with a Gauss Rifle with an energy weapons skill of something in the teens was amusing.

Steady helps with that. Steady also improves hit percentages in VATS.

I'm supposed to have EW skill of 100 to properly use the Heavy Incinerator and I only have 75 but somehow, I don't think the Deathclaws that had fire rained down upon them could call foul on me.

This got me wondering - How much less effective (in %, preferably) would one be when he doesn't meet the requirement?
For example, I've got 60 unarmed with a Ballistic Fist (req. 100) - How much damage would I be losing out on?

With melee/unarmed weapons it's attack speed, rather than attack power, that's hampered by not meeting weapon skill requirements, though that's obviously going to affect DPS. I couldn't give you any figures though.

DAM loss is a multiplier of 0.67. I made this statement earlier for someone, I unfortunately misunderstood their problem but it should help here:

The Anti-Mat gun requires a SP of 100 Gun, so if your short of that -very possibly - I'm sure you will not meet the full DAM potential. Your gun also requires to be above the repair threshold to maintain it's maximum DAM potential. Sources dictate that if your weapon has a condition of 75-100 your weapon will achieve full stats available, if you are less than 75 condition your weapon DAM degrades at a rate of 0.67% per PT of Condition less than 75. Example: Gun A has Potential 100 and you meet all STR/Gun requirements but your condition of the gun is 46 then it degrades as such: 0.67 x (75-46) = 0.67x29 so the gun actually outputs 100-19.43=80.57 Max at condition 46.

The other questions I do not follow with great clarity so I will hope Lord Vukodlak can assist you there.

Thanks dikeybird and Reno,
Maybe this'd be useful to add to the (unofficial) fallout wiki, as I think there're others facing the same problem as I did.

I guess that's all for now :)
