General question about weapons

Post » Mon Mar 07, 2011 12:06 am

When FO 3 came out, I remember a thread about weapons with one question:
Where are all the weapons we knew from FO 1 and 2? All these HK G11, Pancor Jackhammer, Desert Eagle etc.?
In FO 3 we had nameless "chinese assault rifles" or "hunting rifles" or "10 mm pistol".

Now in FO NV this is again the case.

I'm aware, that I don't need a "HK XY" to win my fights. But for some reasons it felt more like an achievement when I started to find the first "good" rifles, pistols, whatever.

Just out of curiosity: Is there a reason to forgo the "tradition" with weapon brands? Did they just want to save the time for all these extra textures, animations and meshes?

Obviously the players like it to have a "named" weapon, which can be seen by the downloads of weapon mods at nexus.

Opinions?

Well first of all most of those "named" weapons could not be in Fallout universe simply because they were designed after Fallout universe "parted" from ours. I newer liked Fallout 3 "named" weapons for this reason, they simply did not fit in to game. So I was pleased to see Fallout 3 weapons got "purified". And I am perfectly happy with NV weapons as well.

Second, game companies avoid using real gun names nowadays to avoid conflicts with gun producing companies which designed them and hold rights to their marketing names. Look at Stalker for example.

I never played 'Stalker'. What happened there?

The HK G11, Pancor Jackhammer and the Desert Eagle, were all present in fallout 2 and the desert eagle was also fallout 1. Saying they can't be present because of the divergence is rather silly as they used to be present

Guns were all named slightly (or not so slightly in some cases) different from their real life counterparts. The "VSS Vintorez" was renamed to the "Vintar BC" for example, or the "Makarov PM" to the "PMm". There are mods correcting this for each game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series.

Then I recommend you to try those games (3 in total). If you like Fallout, you will not be disappointed ;)

Yes I know they were present and as I sad, I did not like it. It was rather silly. They simply did not fit in to setting.

[Edit:] I just realised I wrote "I newer liked Fallout 3 "named" weapons for this reason". It should have been "Fallout 2 "named" weapons" instead. Just a mistake.

It's a licensing issue more than anything. Many weapons in Fallout: New Vegas are based heavily on real-world counterparts though so I'm able to sleep at night at least.

It would've been nice to see a P90-esque weapon in the game though. I liked P90s before it was cool... But more for the technical and mechanical admiration of the weapon.
