Weapon Repair Kits vs. Jury Rigging

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:34 am

Hello,

I have a character with 90 repair.
I pick up every Wonderglue, Scrap metal, Scrap electronics, wrench and duct tape I come across, in order to make weapon repair kits.
I now have around 30 WRK's.
I also have the perk Jury Rigging, which is why the repair skill is 90.
I was thinking, why waste 40 skill points in repair in order to make repairing easy, when you can make WRK's that repair every single weapon in the game, with items you can find everywhere throughout the Mojave.

The only thing I can think of is the armor, but in my experience a weapon degrades much faster than an armor and spending some caps on getting your armor fixed every once in a while isn't so bad.

So what do you guys think?

Heavy armor degrades much faster than my weapons. Especially if you're using high DAM weapon, since degredation seems to be based off per shot, not damage. Hats and helmets are the worst offenders, with notoriously low hp.

Anyone else get the feeling that giving weapons and armor to companions actually repairs those items over time?

I can't confirm, but it seemed like sometimes the equipment was in better condition than I gave it to them in.

As for the OP, I had no trouble finding enough materials for WRK and also matching weapons to keep all my weapons up to date. Armor was harder, but a sniper character rarely gets damaged armor and NPCs can help you maintain it to full efficiency.

I never took jury rigging in my last game, but I'm not sure whether I will with a melee oriented character.

I have started many characters and every time I always took jury rigging. I started thinking like you, why not put the 40 points (actually 50 with the skill magazine) into another skill. Well this run I never took it and I am at level 19 and quickly putting points in repair so I can take it. It probably has more to do with me using the 12.7 pistol which seems pretty fragile. I started out at Vault 3 with over 20 weapon repair kits on me trying to make my way to Vault 22 (I think 22, the grassy one). I have arrived at the vault but I believe I have less than 10 kits and I doubt I have enough to make it through.

Built to Destroy trait probably has a strong influence on whether jury rigging is worth it or not as well.

I basically get Jury Rigging if I'm planning on getting Hand Loader because at that point you're already at 70 Repair anyway. Otherwise, I get by just fine on Weapon Repair Kits and getting NPCs to repair stuff as needed.

I don't have a problem keeping my weapons up.... but then, I don't use 'rare' weapons either. The problem I have, is ARMOR. jury rigging perk made armor maintenance MUCH easier.

Why Jurry rigging?

-because you can repair 10mm pistol you found on dead viper with 9mm pistol you found on his dead fellow, then sell it for price of repaired 10mm which is 10x more than both of them individually sold.

-because you can repair armour. Ability to repair your combat armour with all that NCR armours you have stored is invaluable. So is ability to repair power armour with metal armour and so on.

I had few items which I did not use simply because I could not maintain them. Since I took JR I use best gear I get.

You still need repair kits from time to time if you use some rare weapons.

Also note that 90 point repair skill is good on its own, you will be repairing weapons with better efficiency.

As a sniper my armor is usually in pristine condition. What I like about the jury rigging perk is the fact that my character doesn't need to carry around 10 pounds of WRK's and just fix my guns in an instant with the items I scavenged while traveling through the Mojave Desert or wherever. Furthermore I'm not very fond of crafting heaps of stuff because it takes a bit more time. Not that I dislike WRK's in particular, though.

Also note that 90 point repair skill is good on its own, you will be repairing weapons with better efficiency.

Also remember in your comparison of things, that WRK's are based off of your repair skill.

So at 90 repair, your WRK actually does more than it would if your repair skill was only 50.

(It works in increments of 25 actually -- so 75 is the same as 90, but either is much better than 50, and 50 is the same as 30 but better than 25)
