Hypothetical armored Trex

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 10:21 pm

First let me say there is no Armored T REX in NV or any Fallout game . On another post we where discussing the 50 BMG and I said " the 50BMG would kill even a ARMORED TREX with one well placed shot " Others disagreed so I will explain my position with science. A Trex can only carry so much weight Armor has weight . I have seen a 50BMG tear through 2inch steel plating like paper so To stop a 50BMG your gonna need thicker than 6 inch steel plate or 13 inches of concrete . Now if you cover a Trex with 6inch thick steel plate or 13 inches of concrete he will be unable to move and it will likely kill him . This would also include Chabum armor which is 1/3 the weight of steel in order to cover Trex your weight would be about the same as a Abrams tank . An elephant can carry about 1200 pounds a Abrams tank weighs about 68 tons . One ton = 2000 lbs it would take 120 elephants to carry the weight of one Abrams tank . There is no way a Trex could carry enough armor to defeat a 50 BMG

There is a T-rex in New Vegas. His name is dinky. He has no armor. And I still say he could survive a .50BMG shot, depending on where you hit him.

I'm not sure I'd agree.

I'd imagine a .50 BMG bullet could kill a T-Rex with a brain shot in one go. Maybe a heart shot, but I doubt it given the small size of the bullet compared to the immense size of the heart.

Problem would be penetrating both the armor, and the thick skull and then managing to hit the brain (which is only a little larger than a human brain) and do sufficient damage to kill it. You'd have to use a jacketed bullet to get through the armor and skull, so you can't count on flattening too much.

It would take a well-placed shot, for sure. And probably some knowledge of T.Rex anatomy.

Maybe there's a perk for that.

The brain is small but the heart and lungs are huge . Any hunter knows shooting just under the arm /front shoulder . Keep in mind it takes 6 inches of steel or 13 inches of concrete to stop a 50 BMG . All the armor a TREX could carry would only serve to make a larger wound as the armor would actually be turned to shrapnel and carrying into the would channel . The TREX would be better off with no Armor .

I think you are over-estimating the strength of the .50 BMG. All the resources I can find say it can penetrate about an inch of armor plating, and a couple of inches of concrete without sustained fire from a machine gun. Granted, that's a lot of armor plating for most mobile things to be carrying.

I also don't believe that armor plating is likely to splinter into shrapnel from an AP round. Usually they just appear to push through and leave the armor bent but primarily intact.

it's ok, you could fire one point blank, and have the game register a 'no hit" or "glancing blow"

happens to me allt he time with point blank shotgun blasts to a target..i get hardly any damage...but if i walk away about 10 feet, THEN i can hit the target..

Google search " how much armor plate can a 50 BMG shoot through ". the consensus on the net is 2 + inches of armor plate up to 6 inch steel plate 9-13 inches of concrete . Make sure you specify BMG because ether are many 50 CAL Also the standard 50 BMG is FMJ but you also have depleted uranium the hardest metal known to man It's like Ap on roids

I propose that the afformentioned armored T-Rex not be armored with metal but rather a combination of composite armor and bullet resistant nylon fiber. That could in fact stop a large caliber round especially taking into consideration that one could armor a T-Rex with such materials fairly heavily.

Also, you don't shoot an animal in the head. You shoot an animal in the heart and lungs. The head is a much smaller target and succeeding at hitting the torso is much easier. If you hit the heart, you can kill even a faily large animal in a matter of seconds. If you shoot an animal in the lungs, it won't be able to breathe.

However, considering the target (armored T-Rex) you'd want to use a higher velocity round with a much higher mass... Something akin to a 25mm cannon would do. Also, high-explosives are extremely effective against armored targets due to the fact that the shockwave would turn the target's armor against itself, crush the body and force the skin, bones, and muscles into vital areas; causing massive internal trauma. High-explosives can be thwarted with reactive armor on the other hand though.

While I do agree that a T-Rex couldn't carry enough armor effectively to stop multiple .50's, I don't think a single round would kill him, unless hitting something vital like through the throat, the brain, or the heart.

Multiple shots? most definitely. I think a Browning M2 .50 cal machine gun could definitely take down a T-Rex, armored or not. how many bullets would it take I have no idea though.

YES. I know what a .50 can do and I know it does immense damage (if you get hit in the head, nobody will be able to find your head), but I have a feeling a T-Rex has pretty high pain tolerance.

The armor need only be that thick to stop a straight shot. Those bullets can bounce, and heavy armor at an angle can deflect.

** Two points:
  • The cube rule is moot in a game with 300 pound ants.
  • The armor could be twice that thickness, as it could be a power suit with a T-Rex inside it ~feeling none of the weight.

you are not taking into account that t-rex's are way taller than you, that means you would have to shooting from an elevated position or from relatively far away to avoid shooting diagonally at him (shooting at a right angle at a flat surface would make the bullet go through much less armor than it would if you were shooting at a very low/high angle.

also, the t rex might be dressed in a modern bulletproof vest, which is effective, and would probable stop a bullet if you put enough on, and it would still allow the t-rex to move.

so, you could kill it in one shot, but it's not likely
