Starting Out

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 10:18 am

Hey I'm just about to start playing Fallout: New Vegas! I played Fallout 3 through a couple times and definitely enjoyed the sniper the most. So, what I'm asking is this. I plan on having these S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes and these tag skills. Do they look good or am I going in the wrong direction? ALSO- I plan on playing through on hardcoe for the difficulty increase! :D

Sniper Class:
Strength-6 (Strength Requirements)
Perception-6 (Seems Fitting)
Endurance-5 (hardcoe, need a little bit)
Charisma-5 (Persuasion is so sweet I couldn't lower the CHA)
Intelligence-6 (Skill points and I like being intelligent)
Agility-7 (Guns...)
Luck-5 (Never trusted going up or down on this stat)

personally id put 6 str to about 8 or so for carrying capacity, 8-9 agi, and higher luck since it increases crit ALOT. i'd ditch perception and put it down a bit, and charisma is useless in this game.
high strength is also useful in close quarters areas and using melee weapons, even if melee skill isnt super high

also might want to tell your skills you plan to use, since SPECIAL can change based on them

What are you talking about? Charisma is not useless at all, it raises your overall DT.

what kind of build you going for? From the looks for your special you wanna do a little of everything in the game. Charisma, that should be at 1 all it does is makes your companions a tiny bit stronger (the speech bonus isn't something to look for), perception you can leave at 5 because you get a little friend to help that out. Luck increases your crits and your ability to gamble. intelligence, im still in between trying to find the perfect balance.

I just saw you want to be a sniper so heres a good (at least i think its good) sniper build
S.5
P.5
E.7
C.1
I.5
A.8
L.9
and get the small frame trait that will give you 9 agi

somethin like that.

As a sniper class, It's normal to assume he will be out of combat alot more often then DT is needed. However, if he is going sniper, I assume this means hes going sneak, otherwise a sniper class is just going to be a gunner class which would be using high str and high endurance.

So a higher agility for sneak, for damage, high strength for carrying and melee since a sniper in close quarters is going to svck, and guns in close quarters, imho, svck in NV.

Since his Charisma isn't going above 5, dropping it a couple points isn't going to kill the game.

Since all the traits blow, you can download trait mods, which add 15 traits, one of which adds an overall DT.

Lower your perception, the companion ED-E will make up for it, and put it into luck or intelligence

I thought it only raised companion's DT?

Perception includes much more than just red blips on a compass. It provides accuracy for your guns, so PER is important.

Also, a good sniper character's SPECIAL is:
S: 6 (8)*
P: 8
E: 5
C: 2 (1)*
I: 2 (1)*
A: 8
L: 9

My character build never changes

S-5
P-5
E-6
C-6 or was it 5?
I-7
A-5
L-6

Then I use implants to buff up strength, a high strength does not matter to me since most weapons I use have a max of 6 strength, which implants see to using. Endurance is 6 soley so I can get more implants. I rely heavily on Charisma and Intelligence.

If going with a sniper build, drop the STR down to 4. (The Anti-Material rifle isn't all that great, and a silenced sniper rifle does wonders to targets if you are hidden.)

I'll give you my hitman build.

S: 4
P: 6
E:
C:
I:
A:
L:

Hm, I forgot most of it and I have a minor headache, so I really don't feel like booting up the system...
But, overall, raise luck, drop STR, Snipers are fast and light, and need luck to score good hits on people.

lower charisma to0 2

lower perception too 2

lower endurance to0 4

Now

raise luck to 10

intelligence to 9

That would make a good sniper class i would say.

(off set the low charisma by tagging speech)
(off set the low perception by picking ED-E as a companion)

God I hope you're having fun! This game is a blast and "guns" is a good way to go your first time around.

I also say drop the CHR stats, you don't need them. I don't think it affects player DT, I have mine at 2 and I can go toe to toe with a deathclaw. Although I usually pop off their head before they get a swing in. I've got a melee build that I can run headlong into Cazadores without flinching and just bat them to the ground.

Intelligence also isn't as important as it was in F3, maybe keep it around 7 for those skill points and take the educated perk, you'll be able to flesh out a lot. You just won't be able to wander down every skill path like you could in F3. Like I currently have 25 or less in explosives, energy weapons, and barter, but every other skill is at or above 50. Melee, guns, speech, and unarmed are at 100.

I'm not great with builds as I tend to identify one or two primary stats and boost them while draining one other. I'd look mostly at Perception and Agility in this case. But, I'll say your initial build looks just fine, should be a blast :D
