Bethesda: how to add more music to games

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 12:24 pm

FONV really, really NEEDS more music, and it shouldn't cost Bethesda (or Obsidian) money.

Have you seen the recent Jeep commercials - the ones with COD Black Ops link ups??

I'm guessing that Jeep paid the game devs a pretty penny to have Jeep "placed" in Black Ops. Product placement has been a common practice in movies for years, now apparently starting to happen in video games also.

SO - the RIAA should pay you to advertise their songs, old songs that otherwise get almost ZERO airplay or sales, and expose a new generation of potential buyers to the music.

And if file size of music becomes an issue for DVD, make "extra" music a DLC for like $2.00, so people can choose or not to d/l extra songs. For this to succeed, you'd need to at least quadruple the number of songs so that people don't keep hearing the same song over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.... well, you get the point

Awesome point...except that few people buy older music nowadays...which is a shame. They are spending their time listining to crappy pop.

Including an artist in a game is advertising for that artist but if they're dead or retired that's of questionable value for their record label. It wouldn't surprise me if FO3 resulted in a lot of people purchasing old music but this was no doubt across a large number of artists and record labels (some of this music is even free to download now) so it's unlikely Bethesda could get record labels on board as advertisers.

There's also a good chance that the record labels would have their own opinions on what songs should and shouldn't be included, if Bethesda pays to have the songs included the developer gets to choose instead.

Well, that is the point: people today don't ever HEAR the old music - it's not played on radio or TV. Video gamers are kind of a captive audience, and some of the songs are good (not all) and a few hearings may make some people want more,

As it is now, well. I used to really like "Big Iron" by Marty Robbins, but I can't stand it now!!!!

Most of the artists played in FONV are dead already, but I bet you $$$$ none of the songs were public domain, so Bethesda probably had to pay for it.

It's still advertising, effectively, for what ever 'oldie' gets played in a video game - as long as they're not played so many times it makes people wanna SCREAM when they hear them again.

I first heard "Big Iron" when I was a small kid, and liked the song - haven't heard it in many many years; I might have actually bought it from iTunes after hearing a few times. Of course now, I HATE IT. And don't get me started about "Johnny Guitar": right now I'm sharpening some wooden stakes, and if I find out that anyone connected with that song is still alive....

Or they could just do what Fallout 3 did, and use alot of public domain songs, which isnt a bad thing, but for every 'known' artist from the 1940s there are 2-3 largely unheard of artists likely in the Public Domain at this point in time.

That's true, which really is why the game really needs to have more music in it. If there were more more songs the game could play, the music would become less repetitive, thus people are less likely to get annoyed by the same song playing too often. I have some mods that extend the default radio station playlists in the game as well as ones that add new stations, and since the radio stations have many more songs they can select to play, I end up listening to the same songs less often, thus I don't feel inclined to stab sharp objects into my ear every time I hear Mad About the Boy playing anymore. Of course, I can still get annoyed when, sometimes, a particular song just keeps playing too often, but when this happens, I can change to a different radio station and hear something else. Unfortunately, players who use the Xbox 360 or PS3 versions of the game don't get to do this, and they are stuck with the few songs Obisidian included in the game.

Now, I may be mistaken about the way copyright works, but I know that a lot of older songs are now public domain, which is why mods can get away with including them, so if the cost of licensing songs is an issue, I'd think that the developers could include some public domain songs. Then again, it may be that since the game is a commercial work, the rules on using such material in it differ from with free mods, still, I'm pretty sure that kind of the point of public domain things is that you don't need to pay anyone to use them, hence why movies and such can freely use public domain music and other such things without fear of copyright infringement.

OR, they could just not have the radio bugged to all hell and rotating only 6 songs. This would be a great way to start.

Seriously. I've heard the other songs out there on youtube. Why is my radio not playing them?

(I've got enough hours in to where I should have heard EVERYTHING).

Seriously, i just ordered a Peggy Lee CD a few days ago from Amazon, because i could not get the song "Why don't you do right" out of my head. I have the youtube video of my favorite version of the song bookmarked for easy listening. I am in the process of looking for some of the other music like, Lets go sunning from FO3 only because it is such a happy song, and a few others. Thankfully the Wiki lists the titles and the artists so it will make the collection a bit easier.

There is this option to extend Radio New Vegas on the Nexus: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35984.
THere are some internet radio channels which DO play this stuff as well.

Madam, you are a star!, I'd been looking for that the last couple if days.

Honestly I never understood why Beth went out and paid license fees, the archive is full of songs that more than fit the fallout mood, and most license free, the GNR more where that came from gave me some real listening pleasure.

I had that burned to a CD for personal use. I listen to it on the xbox via thumb drive (still can't figure out why I can't put MP3s on my HDD) when playing FO3. There's also this one, which has a more Western vibe from that "Atomic era".

Great stuff here and he's added additional track packs since I downloaded it.

Sirius & XM Radio both have several stations that play these 'types' of songs pretty regularly.

20's, 30's, 40's, 50's etc.
Siriusly Sinatra
Classic Vinyl (mostly rock)
Spectrum
Numerous Classic Jazz stations.

I realize this is a fair minority, but to say these songs can't be found on a radio isn't completely true.

Nevertheless, I felt the same way that license fees should be waived in the 'Songs that should have been included' thread. I would appreciatye having more songs - even if I listen to the radio rarely, I still hear the same songs too frequently just walking into settlements and passing by their radios.

The problem with Sirius and XM is that you need to choose that station to listen to, and kids will not do so, and so they will never hear the 'oldies'. But they are essentially a captive audience while playing a video game.

I have the same problem where the radios plays maybe 2 songs on aloop all the time!!!! I have nevere ever heard the full listings, and probably wont as i now play with the radio turned off. As it bugs the hell out of me hearing 2 songs on loop!!!!

Would it not be possible to, say, play any music you have on your PC/Xbox whatever in game by making the likes of a soundtrack/playlist yourself and then play it "a la" custom radio and be your own DJ?!

As you already own the music having already purchased it ( hopefully ) i dont see this as affecting copyrights?! I believe you could do this in other games, such as Gran Tourismo.

Just an idea.

I was a captive audience long before computer games, 40s, 50s and some 60s, it's all my father played, Buddy Holly and Bill Haley being his favorites, I enjoyed them, but I have to say I was a bit relieved when 70s rock happened.

I go out and get songs from video games if I really like them. Hell, go to a trailer for any movie or game on Youtube, and then, if possible, go to the video for that song on Youtube. You'll see tons of comments that are clearly from people who came to that second video because of the music on the first.

For example, go to the video for "Orange Colored Sky" by Nat King Cole and see how many of the more recent comments refer to Fallout or specifically New Vegas.

Plus, it's not like the music for this era/atmosphere needs to be obscure old music...Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Nat King Cole, etc aren't exactly nobodies...

They are pretty much unknown to the younger generations
