PLEASE FIX QUEST ITEM GLITCH

Post » Wed May 11, 2011 2:45 am

I can't stand random items that can some way be considerd quest items when they have nothing to do with a quest. This problems dates back to Oblivion, it would take me 30 seconds just to find the 1 item out of the 30 in my inventory that isn't a quest item. Fallot 3 had the same problem aswell. Still in New Vegas they can't fix it? I have to walk around with a rebreather, a fiend helmet, vault 22 key and I don't even need them for the quest they are optional. Can someone please make it so when the quest is over I can have a fresh inventory and not be bogged down. It anoying to have items that have weight that you can't drop. I've been playing NV for about 40 hours and I have 10+ quest items. I know its not as serious as losing E-D somehow and never being found again or for some reason not gaining Fame from places like the Crimson Caravan after doing all their quests and nothing bad to them but it's anoying to say the least.

I don't really see it as a bother myself, because most of the quest items don't weigh anything.

Also, if one were to remove the restriction on dropping them, there would be a lot more quest crashing/incompletion complaints on here stemming from people not realizing that they left "Quest Item Z52" at their suite in the Lucky 38, or perhaps dropped it somewhere in the wasteland because they didn't think it was a quest item.

It can be annoying to some, yes, but it's to help prevent some quests from never being completed because of user error.

Quest items have no weight, so they're not hurting anything there.

The clutter they cause on the other hand is highly annoying. Stuffing these things into a sub-menu on the pip-boy would help greatly.

Real quest items dont have weight, it is my belief that the quest items with weight, that no matter what you do, cannot drop are glitched. I don't mind the quest items that you need to complete the quest with, it's once the quest is comeplete I want to drop them. Also most of the "quest items" in my inventorys for oblivion, fallout 3, and NV have nothing to do with the quest at all. I just wish they could look into fixing something that just anoys the hell out of me.

All quest items likely have something to do with a quest. You may not be aware of what that quest is. And yes, sometimes they aren't necessary to complete the quest but can be used to do so in some way.

Your complaint is actually about a series of glitches where quests either don't remove an item, don't remove the quest item status when they should, or where the quest can be completed/failed without cleaning up the quest items.

New Vegas has a lot of these items: Motor-Runner's helmet, NCR radio parts, dog's brains, and a whole bunch of other ones.

In theory, fixing the quests will include fixing these items. In a more general sense, the game needs to be modified so that either quest items can be dropped at any time (with a warning, perhaps) or give you a means of intentionally dropping quest items (Oblivion mods had a way to turn off quest item status for all items in your inventory but only for twenty seconds). Either of these would be the best solution because it would prevent problems when a quest has an error, whereas fixing the quests would only help until the next quest error.

If you are on PC, get the http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35639 mod and all will be good.

Nothing you can do for the console versions unfortunately.

I'm just glad they invented the keychain. Damn its so annoying in oblivion having every single key individually visible.

I say the quest item glitch is minor, only a handful of quest items fail to be removed and "no quest item has weight" Not motor-runners helmet or those NCR parts or any other quest item I've found. They may SAY it has a weight but its just an illusion. Being a quest item makes them weightless. Now I'd rather have some weightless quest items cluttering up my inventory then sell, break, or lose them on accident.

Quest items have no weight, so they're not hurting anything there.

That is true, although it's kind of annoying to have them cluttering up my inventory once I no longer need them.

If an item is considered a quest item, it's probably supposed to be, the problem is that some items flagged as quest items are ones that might still be left in your inventory after the completion of the quest. Whether because you chose an option that would cause them to not be lost during the quest or you can acquire more than one of them. One example of the former would be the dog brains you can find in the game. You only need one, but there are three to choose from, if you find them all, the game still only removes the one you chose to use, thus, after completing the quest, you're left with two weightless dog brains stuck in your inventory. The latter would be things like the Repconn rocket models, of which there are many more in the game than you'll ever need, and yet since they're considered quest items, you can't drop them once you've picked them up, thus you're stuck with them.

So I'd say the solution would be to either ensure that all quest items are removed once they are no longer needed, even if you did not use them, or have their quest item status removed once they are no longer needed, assuming they were not removed for any reason. I'd say the latter option would be preferable in quests that would allow it (I.e. quests where it would potentially be possible for some of the quest items involved to still remain in the player's inventory after completing the quest.) this way, you wouldn't have to worry about unintentionally dropping or selling important quest items, but once the quest is completed, you would be able to do as you please with them.

Is it at all possible for the developers to add in their patch (which for some reason has not come out even though they were puting on the "finishing touches" 3 weeks ago) for all quest items to be able to be removed after the quest is completed or failed, i cant stand the clutter. I don't see why they can't fix this problem...

They can. It's a question of how.

Since quest items are made quest items specifically to keep you from losing them, and since they are supposed to be removed or have their QI status changed when the quest ends, the developers prefer to fix the scripts that are not properly removing/changing them.

The problem there is catching every possible way of the scripts failing. The user can more easily find ways to break a quest than they can find ways to protect it.

My preference is to not have quest items at all, but have a warning when dropping them, or a way to remember where you got rid of them.

But that is unlikely since some people would complain about quests getting screwed up.

In the "Items -> Misc" section just have a sub-menu where all quest items go. The one item that is going to be a problem here would be the camera, but it's a more practical solution than adjusting a pile of quests. The bean counters at Bethesda might even authorize the dev time.

I remember on oblivion a quest item bugged and allowed me to drop it. I dropped that journal in the sea (Still don't know why but whatever). I never finished the Fighters Guild because of it.

i wouldn't mind seeing this fixed however the rebreather is very useful throughout the game and I'm happy to have all of them in my inventory if it means keeping the rebreather.

There wouldn't be any reason to remove the rebreather. The quest giver has no need of getting it back.

Quest items are generally split into two categories: Ones you need to give to someone and ones that you only need to show to someone or use yourself for a specific purpose.

The first type is meant to be removed. The second is meant to have its QI status removed. Really, the first batch should have its QI status removed as well unless they are scripted to disappear from the game world entirely. The whole problem with the NCR Radio parts is because you can retrieve them after turning them in.
