Where can I find 5mm Hollow Point Ammo?

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 2:15 am

I can't find this anywhere! I've found every other type of ammo, but no merchant I've found sells it! Is it even in the game>

For questions like these, there's always resorting to the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/5mm_round_%28Fallout:_New_Vegas%29.

If you can't seem to find them, save in front of the Gun Runners Vendortron, exit the game, reload the game and save file, and it should have a new inventory for you. Just repeat until you find your preferred ammunition.

Edit: They should carry the ammunition. If not, use the same method above on other merchants / vendors.

I've checked the wiki, done the reload exploit and even started a new game. The Vendortron does carry new items, but never 5mm Hollow Point. I was just wondering if anyone has actually found this ammo.

Not every ammo type has a hollowpoint or armor-piercing version. 5mm I believe doesn't have a hollowpoint version.

Wikia says it does have a hollow point version. Can't say I remember seeing it much, but it's in the GECK as well.

I don't think there is hollow point ammo. it's not really the type of gun that needs increased firepower against unarmored opponents, just point n' spray, they go down. armor piercing is the max you need, i don't see the use of HP ammo in the game at all, in my opinion. just a more powerful version of the standard bullet that increases the DT on armored foes. anything that doesn't have DT can't possibly be hard to kill, at least to the point where you have to pump 'em full of bullet shrapnel.

edit: read above post(dude above me). ma bad, ma bad...

Using that GECK of yours, is there any way to tell which Vendors have a chance of carrying it?

Why would you want HP over AP?

Just use normal rounds for the lighter things, and AP rounds for other things.
You can still be a god roaming them wastes.

I'm not saying I want to use them. I was just wondering if they were in the game, cause I've never seen it.

I was curious about this myself so I looked at this in the GECK, and surprisingly it looks like 5mm HP ammo is not sold by anyone. It also doesn't appear in any Leveled Lists at all so while it exists in the GECK it appears you'll never see it in the game itself either as loot from a body/container or sold by a vendor. Very curious, as that ammo type is the only one in the game that has those characteristics as far as I can tell.

Probably removed for balance. The minigun with standard rounds already utterly shreds anything unarmored.

brush gun, you do almost 200 damage a shot, and even with 3x DT on enemies, thats only around a max of 60, so your gaining a bonus of 20 a shot :D

I think a 5mm hollowpoint would be gimped just for the sake of DT.

I'm pretty sure such bullets don't exist, especially in real life. the point of such small rounds is penetration (I'm pretty sure) if you made such a tiny bullet hollowpoint i don't think it would work.

And also too, consider how the minigun does its job. It works by pounding out alot of tiny bullets to do a ton of damage. Each individual shot doesn't do much damage, so when you toss hollowpoints into the equation, you end up doing alot less damage.

So I guess in the end, 5mm Hollow Point Ammo is to be considered cut content?

Damage bonus is applied to damage that leaks through DT. If the gun does 75 basic damage and you shoot at somebody with 15 DT, then you do 75-15 = 60 damage. If you use hollow points, their DT becomes 15*3 = 45, 75-45 = 30 damage goes through the DT and is multiplied by 1.75 = 52.5 damage delivered.

The Brush Gun's raw power is enough to make hollow points advantageous up to target DT of 13: 75-13 = 62 for standard ammo, versus (75-13*3)*1.75 = 63 for hollow points. After that, standard ammo is better.

I'm pretty sure such bullets don't exist, especially in real life. the point of such small rounds is penetration (I'm pretty sure) if you made such a tiny bullet hollowpoint i don't think it would work.

The game's 5mm round is, probably, based off the obsolete 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum which was a very small bottlenecked round aimed at larger varmints. The real life round has plenty of power to cause effective deformation of hollow point bullets at short ranges. Reportedly will kill coyotes and hares and that sort of thing no problem. It isn't quite as powerful as the PDW rounds like 5.7x28mm that you are thinking of, but the real difference is the bullet design. PDW rounds are designed to penetrate. It isn't a function of their size, it's a function of the composition of the bullet: armor piercing rounds will typically have a dart-like "penetrator" made of hardened steel or even tungsten. When the bullet hits a target, the jacket peels back, allowing the penetrator to (ideally) continue onward through the material. Bullets for hunting are nothing like this, they are made only of soft lead that will deform easily and cause a large wound in the target.

Maybe it was a throw back to the original games, where all you have was either HP or AP ammo in 5mm? Then they decided that standard "ball" ammo was good enough for the job of unarmored enemy disposal?
