About the inevitable GOTY edition

Post » Tue May 31, 2011 11:31 pm

Hi there,

As the title suggests i hope to give some food for thought about the GOTY edition. Specifically, i'd like to suggest that, apart from all the DLC content, it would be great if Obsidian could add some exclusive content. Something like present for all those who willingly waited for a the GOTY. This could range from extra-packages like we got for the various special editions of NV, to an adventure/quest pack.

I know that nowadays DLC is da [censored] yadda yadda, but it would be very thoughtful to give something to the people who don't like digital addon policies. I'm just saying. People enjoy being rewarded and in return they keep buying your stuff.

Just buying the GOTY disc and playing the DLCs finally will be my reward.

Uh...

From Bethesda's and Obsidian's point of view it would have been better if you had bought the game on release or pre-ordered. So if anything they would withhold content.

And with the pre-order packs they kind of are.

Why should you be rewarded for not buying the game? Keep the GOTY the way has been basically people who don't have the internet or would like to get all the DLCs for a good price. That's your reward for waiting.

Yep, I don't have PSN, nor any way to buy them anyway, so I wait for the GOTY, I just read the wiki to learn all I can about them.

Is there a reason for you to be that aggressive? I don't see any "entitlement" since i was making a suggestion. Seriously, you need to calm down a bit.

Well, there are lots of things that a company might wish for. Obsidian and all the other developers know very well that there are lots of people who will not buy their products from day one. In fact, in most cases, the vast majority of people won't. Especially for a game which is guaranteed to have lots of DLC in the future. It's not like you can force people to buy stuff, you have to give them tasty offers. Real basic stuff, i would say.

Why should you be rewarded for not buying the game? Keep the GOTY the way has been basically people who don't have the internet or would like to get all the DLCs for a good price. That's your reward for waiting.

There's a flaw in your line of thought. Not buying the game on day one doesn't equal not buying the game at all. Games have a rather short life cicle. GOTY editions offer a way to sell considerable amounts of units even after public interest may have waned. The "reward" is basically the same thing as "special edition extras". They are there to arouse interest and positive feedback. Besides, most GOTY editions don't have that "good price" argument going for them. Many people don't buy them because they are cheaper, but rather because they don't like digital distributions like DLC. It's that simple.

There is no flaw in my line of thought why would a company want to reward people for picking up their game at a lower price and yes it is a lower price the GOTY edition will most likely be $60 which was the price of the base game if you add all the DLC it would be $100 value. Also if they don't like DLC then they must not realize you have to download the disk in order to play it on your console, so yes I stand by my original post. Would I mind if they threw in a set of armor with the GOTY? No but it should be available to the customers who were already there for the company but should you be rewarded just for the fact your buying the GOTY? Hell no.

To me, "gold editions" should be called Delta. Alpha is when the game is barely working and it's just a scattered pile of pieces. Beta is when the game is mostly working and probably playable but rough. In house testing begins to find glitches. Gamma version is when you start selling what you have, both to start open testing for glitches and to start earning money so you can add the secondary features you had in mind. Delta version, is when the game is actually done. The majority of the bugs that the public found have been ironed out, and everything that you wanted to add to the game, you have added.

With that in mind, if anything Delta version should cost more than Gamma, since it's more complete and polished. Delta is a better product. People who play Gamma should pay less because the game isn't even done yet, and they have to suffer through more bugs and wait for sporadic content in chunks.

:)

Of course it doesn't work like that because gamers in general are impulsive and impatient, and the thought of waiting two years for something to actually be done before getting it doesn't appeal to most. Version gamma costs more because playing it "first" (?) is somehow considered an added value over waiting for delta.

No kidding. I pre-ordered all Sins of a Solar Empire games because Stardock grants all pre-orderers automatically Beta test access :hehe:

We don't need anything new in the GOTY/Ultimate edition. I'd be happy with the 4 DLC's and the latest Patch.

Mind you that huge open ended games are extremely complex programs, lots of things who would be impossible to pick up except in a long term public beta, this is pretty impossible for single player games as they would be pirated long before release.

Main question is who owns the pre order content? It might be the stores and not Bethesda.
And no I do not like pre order content, Dragon Age 2 is a reason to avoid it at any cost.

Honestly I see where you are coming from, but it would not be fair to the rest of us who buy the DLCs as they come out. If it was a really cool item I would out another 60 bucks if I wanted it (would have to be very, very cool). Then everyone would be on the forums screaming that all they are after is the money.

What I don't understand is why they did not do what they did with Fallout 3. Sell them packaged as two DLCs in hard box form. I broke down and DLed the DLCs like they wanted me to, but I really miss the days of actually owning a disk with my games.

As long as it was along the lines of the pre-order items then I would not see anything wrong with it. Heck give them a choice of what pre-order packed they get when they open the box even. It does not change the game that much, but I feel much safer with my armored vault suit, weathered 10 mm, and my canteen I never seem to drink from.

Apparently, that he should be rewarded for not buying the game and DLC when they came out by getting free stuff on top of the patched game and DLC at a cut rate price.

The problem with the retail version of F3's DLC, which was primarily aimed at people without XBL/PSN (like me), was that with the added content came a boatload more bugs, delivered to an audience with no means of fixing them via patches. Given how problematic some of NV's DLC has been in this regard, repeating the exercise would be a recipe for disaster. Offline peeps who want to play the NV DLC will just have to wait for the GOTY bumper pack (fully patched and finally in working order) edition, should we ever see such a thing.

Doesn't a game have to be "game of the year" to get a goty version? pretty sure that Red Dead Remdemption was the game of the year for 2010...right?

In short: no. "Game of the year" isn't an official title awarded by the entire industry to one and only one game each year. There are a thousand different websites and magazines that each have their own end-of-year awards, some more high-profile than others but when it comes to marketing (which is what this boils down to) they all count. And even if not one internet dungeon can be found that voted NV 2010 GOTY, they can just go ahead and call it "New Vegas: Deluxe Edition" or whatever instead.

It's an essentially meaningless title.
