I've spent over $100 trying to make this game work.

I live in the boonies currently and won't be moving anywhere even close to speedy internets for a few months, so I thought some Fallout NV would cheer me up, and it did. Until I tried to install it.

Here's the more or less exact way I've gotten it to work so far: Drive half hour to nearest moochable wifi (McDonalds; can only stay roughly hour at a time) to download Steam on netbook. Buy crossover cable to manually move Steam folder from netbook to pc with dial-up connection. Open Steam finally; password doesn't work because I signed into my account on another computer. Wait until Steam updates and then decides to load login screen as to change password. Days pass. Many moons later, I'm able to finally register Fallout until lo! I can't just register a retail copy of the game, I have to play it online first, and to do that it wants to download a roughly 6k mb download. Send email to Steam customer support inquiring about a possible 1-800 number to call instead. Directed instead to delete .blob files in installation folder. And then the entire installation folder. And then restart. And then run the file in compatibility mode. And then-- until I've exhausted customer support, google, and myself.

By now many moons have passed and I still haven't played the offline one player game I bought a week ago because I have a slow internet connection. I can't play the offline one player game I legally bought because of my slow internetz. Because of piracy. I've never pirated a game unless it was literally impossible for me to get my hands on a physical copy of it. I've never wanted to pirate a game. Fallout's anti-piracy measures have made me want to pirate a game more than ever I've wanted anything in my life.

After all this driving and buying network cables and wifi cards for my netbook, I can open Steam right now (after a lengthy update) and look at the game but I can't play it in offline mode. Because of the aforementioned roughly 6k mb download that I can't mooch wifi to download on my netbook because it doesn't have a disc drive and therefore install the necessary updates to Fallout without first downloading the entire thing. That I own. In the box. With the registration number. I try to download those wicked updates, call it spite or desperation because both are correct, and the network times out, or I hit 'cancel' and Fallout inexplicably loads anyway-- so that it can then instantly crash.

And so I ask you, at my wit's end and wanting desperately to just play this game I'm looking at on my desk as I type this: WAT.

Really, if anyone could help me I'd be eternally grateful.

You have 2007 video card drivers. Those have to be updated. Your sound card drivers also need some updating. Unfortunately it has to be done through the internet.

You can try simply disabling your internet adapter. That should allow you to play in offline mod. Steam will try to update itself and you will have to wait a few for it to realize there is no connection. It should popup with an offline option.

It sounds like youve already initiated the update through steam but
canceled it part way through. That can cause issues with the game.

heres the thing. I assume you dont update vista much either.
There can be issues there as well. Software updates are important.
Fallout 3 new vegas fixed an nvidia stutter issue with the first patch.

well to start with your graphics driver needs updating, it wouldnt start even if it was installed. next about the download on steam i have previously seen a thread detailing how to bypass steam and install direct of the disc leaving only the updates to do, but despite looking i couldnt find it so your best bet is to look around for info about that

Yeah, it took a lot to stop it from trying to download the actual game, but when I tried to load it for the first time it was like Update lolz!

I've updated my drivers and will download Vista service pack 1 and 2 later tonight when it's less hot. One thing I was wondering though was, whenever I try to start up Fallout, it just downloads...something.

It's only 6,925mb, so I'm wondering if it's some necessary updates or something?

I can get to the game menu (the "index"), and it recognizes my various media cards and sets the game to medium quality accordingly, but immediately crashes when I hit play. Here's more detail:

Yeah, learned that a little late. :/ Got it installed from disc finally but the game won't play offline until I finish three hundred-ought mb download. ._____.

I still appreciate all the help I found here though.
