Robert House: The Last, Best Hope for Humanity

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:32 am

Alrighty, what I'm asking is if anyone else has been interested in the other aspects of Robert House's life. We get some tidbits of information, tantalizing family gossip. It's meant to be mysterious and vague because most information has been lost. However, I've always been curious how Robert House would deal with the problems that plagued Howard Hughes (House's inspiration).

Did House have a crippling fear of filth? (something Obsidian makes an interesting parallel with in that he will die in a year if exposed to the bacteria of the outside world)
Would there have been a "Hell's Angels" movie about robots? How would he reach the top of the robotics business world?

So, I'm opening the floor to theories or concrete information about House and RobCo, as well as interesting theories anyone can make up, regarding how House would have dealt with the life of Howard Hughes.

*Chuckles at Last's post*

Anywho. House isn't Howard Hughes by the book. House is Hughes from the perspective of his Vegas years, when his OCD was driving him further into madness, but House's isolation 16 years prior to the War has more to do with his predictions and preprations for the War. As for the disease, it's likely because even open a crack, his Life Support system is no longer sterile, allowing risk of a microbial infection. Another nod to Hughes though is at Camp Golf, the huge portrait is a mimic of Howard Hughes in front of one of his planes.

I didn't say the crack in his life support was OCD. I just thought it was an interesting parallel. And yes, I know of the portrait, and his actions, hence why I think he's inspired largely by Hughes. I still think House likely suffered from some sort of mental illness, despite how much I like him.

So, what's the Robot Version of Hell's Angels?

I'd like to know more about what he did as the CEO of Robco.

I'd also think it would be interesting to find out if he was associated with the Enclave in any way at any point in time. I'd say it's a pretty good bet that he was privy to the Oil Rig plan in the pre-war years.

Business things

Assuming he didn't know of the Enclave, he DID have close ties with Government, seeing as he repurposed REPCONN's plasma technology for a juicy weapons contract. Also being so closely knit with a space program, I don't doubt that he was in with Fallout's equivalent of NASA.

@Present- he's not a movie star, a rich celebrity yes, but he was a businessman from the age of 20. He likely never directed a movie that wasn't a 'Welcome to the world of RobCo' type corporate training video.

Oh don't be so coy, I'd hardly call overseeing the construction of a 40 foot tall mecha-robot as "business".

Facitious lies. Only people who kill him are savages or those who don't appreciate luxury and civility. :cryvaultboy:

I'd rather 1 genius control one million idiots and lead humanity in the right direction swiftly than one million idiots control what 1 genius decides and cause humanity to rebuild at a babies crawl.

Even though most of the time I dont side with House or for that matter agree with a lot of what he's done in the past and wants to do in the future, I still do respect him. This is a man who saved Vegas from what, 88 warheads, or something like that? Even though im a NCR supporter all the way its still a hard choice on who to side with, just because I think that House is a one of a kind mind in the world post war, and I hate to take lose that because I think that if he could get that ego of his out of the way then the potential could be limitless for what he could do to help rebuild the world. I still side with NCR but House is certainly a interesting choice, that for sure.

Mr.House is an autocrat, not a dictator.

He said it himself, he doesn't care what people do in their spare time. He just wants to keep Vegas alive and rebuild Humanity's future, Hes really selfless actually, living forever just to see Humanity have a bright future, imagine sitting around for 200 hundred years, being in a half coma, just watching things? Its why he likes Snow Globes, He gets to peer into a little world, in which at any moment he can flip it upside down.

At what cost?

At the cost of sparing NCR from defeat against the Legion, and the Legion getting it's head kicked in. If NCR is made to sign treaties with House, House still sends power to NCR, do you believe for one second the Legion would the same? Plus, Kimball and Oliver are thrown out of their positions, thus likely letting CAPABLE leaders take over for NCR. I don't oppose NCR, I just oppose Kimballs regime. I believe a House/NCR trade agreement would do the world alot of good.

@RVD- Agreed, I prefer him using 'Autocrat', dictator implies abusing it's power, in which case, the NCR government, and any other, does this as well. I think people are just used to this idea of 'Democracy is right because it is what our governent teaches is right. It is our duty to believe our government' and all that dross. New Vegas is the same as Las Vegas before the war, a city of business. Who better to run it than the founder and CEO of a vast corporation Pre-War?

NCR is corrupt and in over their heads. I don't think the idea of Democracy and freedom and all that is bad, I just think once Mr.House has his army, there is really no point in them being in The Mojave, other than their one purpose of helping its economy.

They need to go home, the war is/was (whatever tense were talking in) killing them.

What is the cost of spreading the NCR's "Democracy" (with may I add, much political corruption) by trying to bring their "fair rule" to the Mojave?

The lives of thousands of NCR soldiers for a start.

Colonel said it best, House is a "benevolent dictator" and it is my personal opinon that a brillant and fair benevolent dictator is much more effective in rule than a poorly managed Democracy.
