Brink stuck between real and unreal?

SO

I was asking my pal today why he hasn't touched Brink since really a week after it came out... and today he had an interesting view that actually made some sense to me.. I was wondering what you all think..

he says he feels Brink is stuck in between trying to be realistic and trying to be unrealistic.. example: Grenades are not realistic, and Guns/mechanics sort of are. (rough example)... its putting him off because he thinks the game is not doing what its trying to do or was said to do... and I can't help but think back and wonder... based off the old gameplay of PHOTO-REALISTIC Brink... did the old mechanics sort of just stay now with their core intact...but everything else get shafted in a quick attempt to be less realistic? Like a bad cover up...

What do you think? Is Brink stuck in between and can't make up its mind!?

I don't know where the decision came from to change the explosion effects from old Brink to new Brink, but that guy needs to be fired.

I think you can look at it that way but I think they struck a really nice balance art wise, maybe Im just a fan-boy in denial but I think that the Brink art department knew what they were doing and made the game look like they wanted

Actually I think that sums it up fairly well. That said I don't think it's a bad thing. It has the relatively realistic elements that lend more believability to the unique style and story (what little there is).

Of course Brink doesn't completely deliver on everything they promised but I don't think that's an issue with the super realistic vs hyper-realism styles. Though I do believe that the style changes may have led to some production hurdles that prevented them from focusing on the rest of the game they wanted to create.

Every game has this type of mechanic though. If the game is entirely foreign and unrelated to the real world it will make it much more difficult to learn how to play. If the game is too realisitc then it will simply not be fun to play.

In my eyes, the game has this overall surreal quality... but it certainly doesn't detract from the immersion.

yeah that makes sense....
i dont think brink ever tried to be realistic really , new/old art style or not , the developers we're always talking about removing cheap/exploitable gameplay elements from the fps genre as a whole for there game, so with that alot of "realism" is sacrificed....for the better in my opinion.....

i know your buddy is referring to the older videos which looked great , larger explosions slightly less cartoonish movements, brink looked great that way but as it is now its not any less immersive and seems to play alot better than most multiplayers when you can get a full game going....either way the gameplay mechanics would have turned out the same in the end.

Yes, that's a good way of putting it, but I see that in a positive light rather than a negative one.
