Cause, I sure as hell don't know where mine is.
Yes, this is a work-ethic thread.
I don't know about many of you but when I started working at the age of 11 delivering newspapers (do people actually still read these things?) I learned that people expected you to be at their door with the paper at a certain time.
This knowledge followed me forever. Now, I'm married, with two kids and I still get up everyday and go to work. The only problem is, I'm never on time. Oh, but it's not me. See, I'm scheduled to meet my partner at a specific place at a specific time to pick him up. See, where I work my job title is, "Lead" that means I'm in charge. And my partner's job title is "helper". My job description in laymans terms is, "Babysitter". See, having done this job for a very long time I don't have to do a lot of things. Thats why I have a helper.
Problem is. This kid just turned 26 and doesn't seem to like to work. He does however enjoy getting drunk, laid and acting like an all around [censored]. This morning, I show up on time to pick him up on time, as usual and I wait, and wait and wait. Finally, annoyed I text him that he still needs to go to work. He texts me back, "Sorry, I meant to text you last night. I'm going to meet you there." meaning on the job. Well, I leave go to the job and have now been sitting in the parking lot waiting for this idiot to show up. That first text was the last I heard from him. He is still not here and I'm pissed.
I'm sorry, but why is there no work-ethic anymore? Seriously. I can guarantee you that he'll either show up mid-day or not at all and I'll get a phone call or text stating, "Dude, sorry. What had happened was there was this chick, she came over. We got drunk. She kept me up all night. I just woke up. I'm so hung over. Do you still need me to show up?"
When I was his age, yeah. I partied. Got drunk, trashed rooms. Stayed up all night. Never got laid though, was never popular with the ladies. But the real difference is, I still showed up for work. Sober. This kid comes in drunk off his ass. How he still has a job is beyond me. I really don't understand it. What irritates me most though, is that this idiot won't show up today but will still get paid for 8 hours of work. Why? Because he is unethical. He isn't going to call our boss and tell him that he isn't coming in.
My question to those that do work on here is this: Do you think his actions are deplorable? Are they un-ethical? Am I wrong for being pissed that I show up to work do his job and basically cover his ass (nothing in my job description says that I have to do anything other than watch a panel)? Should I throw him under the bus?
If you don't have a work ethic, and your not lucky enough to have money, then your going to get bit in the ass big time eventually. Plain and simple. It is for the reasons you describe that people in your position don't have patience for people without a work ethic, and as im sure you know, that is common among 90 percent of employers. I hope he learns to work before he ends up homeless or something. Also, just complain to your boss or something. You sound like a voice of respect at your job, use it.
