Eye laser surgery

Post » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:37 pm

Im getting sick and tired of lenses and glasses and I want to do the laser eye surgery next winter. I wanted to know how it went for you guys or for someone you know who had it ?

Im trying to figure out if I should take the full coverage (3500$) or just the basic (2300$) and hope that everything goes smoothly in the futur... did you ever need to go back for re-adjustment?

Thanks

1. We* never suggest people get laser eye surgery before the age of 25. Your eyes can significantly change until then (and for some, still a few years after)

2. Don't go into laser eye surgery expecting to end your use of glasses. In all likilhood you will still need them for certain things if you eye sight is bad enough, or will need them again in the future regardless

3. Virtually everyone who has laser eye surgery needs to get some re-adjustment, especially 10+ years down the line. As short as 3 years I've seen it happen.

*This is the official recommendation of the doctors at my office.

At my optometrist they said you need to be 20, and not have had any change in your prescription for 2 years.

I know. Good thing I have only a slight astigmatism in one eye, which even accounted for leaves me with less than +1s and get all my glasses for free :frog:

Edit: frog emoticon more fitting :frog:

Same, though I might consider it if I had good insurance to cover it.

My wife got her eyes lazer'd about a year ago, she had some blurriness at first but it settled and now she doesn't use her contacts anymore.

I'd never go for contacts, they give me the creeps.

My Mum's getting it done in a few weeks. She's been told that she might have to have other treatments, but it likely won't be for years down the line. I'm still suspicious of it, and don't like the idea of someone firing a laser at her eyeballs. :P And apparently they have to do something with one eyeball where they peel back the top layer of... stuff to do the adjustment properly. Gross and scary, if you ask me.

That's how the surgery works, they have to slice the cornea before they use the laser.

Oh God, it makes my eyeballs squirm just to think about it. I can see why it would be nice not to bother with glasses or contacts, but I couldn't go through with it.

One thing, they use a paralytic on your eye first right?

I was determined to get this done a year or so ago after some strong recommendations from friends who have had it done, then I made the big mistake of watching a video of the procedure on youtube - put me right off. Everyone says the procedure is painless and just feels very weird, but just the idea of what they do to you while you're completely conscious makes me cringe.

Well I know you're awake while they do it, so they probably put some kind of anesthetic in your eyes.

A friend of mine had it done and she said there were no doctors cutting her eye, just a cheese grater type slicer goes through yer eyes and opens up the little shield and then they put the laser over her eye. Theirs two types of laser eye surgery, If you want it that bad then look up info about it like lasix.

Well yeah, you think they would cut it haphazardly with a scalpel?

I know that with some surgeries they actually use the laser to cut the cornea.

My mom had eye surgery two years ago. Or was it one year? Anyway, she had to use bifocal glasses before she got the surgery. They corrected one eye, but not the other (on purpose) or something like that. But, she still uses glasses for some distance viewing. Doesn't need glasses for reading.

Her eyes also got really dry, they still are, in fact, even years after. She has to put eye drops in a lot.

That's about all I know.
