FREE for 2 weeks? REALLY?

Post » Sat Jun 25, 2011 4:16 am

quote from the bethesda blog

"The game’s first DLC, Agents of Change, will be FREE for two weeks on Xbox LIVE, PSN, and Steam! The content is currently in submission at Microsoft and Sony, and we expect it to release in early July. As previously mentioned, the DLC features two all-new environments, five new player abilities, two new outfits, and two new weapon attachments. You can find more details in our previous post, and be sure to check out the screenshots above."

note the " FREE for two weeks on Xbox LIVE, PSN, and Steam! "
since when is it only free for two weeks only!? i thoughht for pc its going to be free as a appreciation for bearing with them to sort out the problem.
and now theyre saying its only free for 2 weeks? what is this? did they just take back their promise?
so SP you are saying we get to play 2 maps and 2 outfits for two weeks for free then.....we will have to pay for them afterwards?

i stood by you guys till now. its is really a disappointment.

Uhm...I think you're reading into it a little to much there, dude. What it means is that for the 1st to weeks the content is out, it'll be FREE TO DOWNLOAD. Meaning that anyone who downloads it within the 1st two weeks of it being available will get it free. After the two weeks are done however, anyone else will have to pay for the content.

Yeah Oz70NYC i think your correct here, better be.. xD

but still its insanely unreasonable, many BRINKers have been here since day one.. playing a somewhat unplayable game, giving as much feedback as possible to SD.
SP promised a solution and a FREE DLC, free for 2 weeks aint free, the word FREE no longer excists.

If you helped SD make it a better game from the start and you just happen to not be able to got on BRINK at all during those 2 weeks your just screwed over?!?!

WTF SD GET YOU ACT TOGETHER, YOU GAVE AS A GREAT BUT EPICLY UNFINISHED GAME, DONT PUNISH US ANY FUTHER FOR PLAYING YOUR DAMN GAME!!

In sleepyface's defense the statement is easy to misinterpret considering SD's track record.

Also.....isn't the 2 week limit counterproductive to increasing the community's size down the road? And, and, isn't the consensus dat this "DLC" is part of the original game but removed so more money can be milked later?

You wud think dat after a disastrous launch with record returns to Gamestop, SD wud make the first DLC free til the sun burns out and think bout charging us for a real DLC further down the road. I wonder if Bethesda put them up to this.

You guys are joking right?

This is EXACTLY what everyone has been [censored]ing about since the moment they announced it. You get a free DLC and a MAJOR update BECAUSE OF the feedback.

Now you are [censored]ing about it only being free for two weeks?

Seriously?

If I were SD, at this point I would just ignore this site all together and focus on the SD forums, at least there they are constructive.

Edit: The "consensus" of every DLC release within the first 1-2 months of ANY game is that it was part of the original game and was held back for profits.

What you have to take into account is the time the game is in post production, printing, distributing and then out on the shelves, it takes time, time smart devs use to create more content in the age of DLCs.

^^^This.

Far more objectivity over on the SD forum then there is here. Over their, people seem to grasp the idea that for the 1st two weeks the content is available, anyone who DLs it gets it free. It's marketing people. Anyone who doesn't realize this obviously aren't to savvy when it comes to corporate affairs. I have a bachelor's in business management, but it doesn't take a degree to figure out their intentions. All of the existing player base (however many of us there still is) will get the content within the 1st two weeks obviously. And anyone who buys the game after the two week period at the new price point of $40 (That's what Gamestop is selling it at now) will have to most likely pay $9.99 for the new content. In essence, those of us who bought the game at $60 will have the opportunity to get the DLC free right off the jump, as will anyone else buying the game now at $40 within the two weeks it's 1st made available. After that, they slap a price tag on and anyone new after those two weeks will have to pay for it.

It's a smart plan actually, but truth be told I doubt they'll make much coin off of it. Let's face it, Brink's not pulling in a big player base. I mean don't get me wrong, I personally love the game. And I am seeing a lot more players online on PS3 within the last two weeks. But the community as it is now is about as big as it's ever going to be. So making the new content free initially to appease those of us who have endured and enjoyable, but obviously incomplete game is a good move to keep the people still playing happy, but I doubt it'll attract many new players into to fold.

I suppose. Maybe they're hoping that whatever increase happens within the 2 weeks is enough to spark the game's popularity again and people will start buying the game and DLC. That way they can make a little money again. I'm not a business major and I don't agree with it but why else would they make it 2 weeks only.

well, to be fair, they're not punishing us, who are still here but anyone who has traded in their games thinking they might get back to it later after the DLC is released only to realize they missed the free for 2 weeks window. i hope they're still keeping tabs on Brink bcoz i'm pretty sure being screwed for the 2nd time wud make them swear off SD forever.

So there's no objectivity to calling bullsh*t on a suddenly announced 'Free DLC for 2 weeks only' announcement instead of the 'Free DLC' they've been feeding us all this while? I think we are savvy enuff bout corporate affairs to understand what they're doing here but thanks for spelling out the details anyway.

Dun have a bachelor's in business management but come to think of it even a high school kid waiting on his/her diploma knows dat doing this will only screw over everyone since it will hurt the player base in the long run. I really want Brink to be my secondary FPS when I get tired of BC2 but I'm losing hope for an influx of new gamers for the next few months.

Unless they have another DLC planned for release 2-3 weeks after the first DLC, and make it cost 600-700 MSP. The inertia they picked up with the first DLC will have worn out. (600-700MSP because people would notice that it is a lot lower then what COD maps cost and 100-200 less then what a standard Halo Map pack would cost)

If SD adds more abilities, outfits, weapons and attachments along with 2 more maps I'd say that would be worth 1200 MSP. Obviously their servers have been tracking our stats since the game came out, it would be nice if they sent people DLC discount codes to people who have been playing since it came out; By "people who have been playing since it came out" I mean people who have a certain amount of time played 1-2 weeks before the first map pack comes out.

Like I said. It's all a business ploy. I never said it was a "good" business ploy. But you have to think of it on their side of things. No one from SD or Bethesda will outright say it, but they lost some major coin with Brink. It wasn't a flop, but it didn't do fiscally what they intended it to do. They did make money off the game, but not nearly as much as they most likely projected. So loses were suffered by them, as evident by their advertising of Brink here in my area, New York City. There were brink billboards and banners in the subway on on MTA buses. That ain't cheap...at ALL. Then you add to the fact that retailers are now selling the game at $40, and that's even more money they're losing. So to balance that out, they make their long awaited DLC for the game free...at 1st, to insure the already installed player base, who have endured the poor press and bashing the game (and community) has suffered for the last two months will be happy, and still playing the game. And anyone else who happens along buying the game cheaper then the initial MSRP, they still recoup money off of, since in order to experience the game as the base community is, they need to buy the content. Is it fair? Perhaps not. Is it smart in the long run? Definitely not. BUT...they have to try and recoup their loses SOMEHOW. This is an attempt to do just that.

Wow, I am on both forums, and lots of people have the same feelings, and the posts there are not far off from this forum. http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28933 titled BRINK DLC to come in July, won't be free? FYI, I am not complaining about the DLC. I don't care if it is free for a bit, then you pay. I will be getting it while it is free and I will continue to play :)

Ok, from what im hearing is were already [censored]ing about a DLC that isnt even out yet. I first like to say that the makers and gamers are both at fault right now. I've heard so many people say how Brink was over promised and under delivered. I get that and your right to a point. But on the other hand how many people have said pay attention to us and listen to what we need and want. Then when they start to we just [censored] about it anyway. Doesn't make much sense. We need to look at this in the positive way instead of trying to nit pick and find only the negative. I love playing this game but still would agree with a lot of u that we got an unfinished product, but im over it. I'm goin to play the game for what it is and love it. If you cant do that then give it up. If you can do that then you'll start to realize or look that anything they do new from here on is a bonus and a good thing. People please remember this is a game. Just a game and you getting so frustrated over it will only make it worse for you and the community. I understand you feel like you wasted ur money that u might not have to waste, but im sorry to tell you this isnt the last time ur going to feel that way in ur life. Anyway my point is we need to start focusing on the positives of these kinds of things. I'm telling you it will help everyone in doin so.

'Free DLC for 2 weeks only' announcement instead of the 'Free DLC' they've been feeding us all this while?

Feeding us?

They have said it what 2-3 times and the community took it from there. Why do you think this site has dozens of threads complaining about how the dlc isn't out yet, starting something like June 2nd.

They haven't fed us anything. They stated it was to be a free dlc and they stated what was going to be in it, they have delivered on these statements, anything else is the community buzzing over it's own suppositions.
