Your Video Game "Dream Team"

Post » Mon Jun 27, 2011 7:06 pm

I've seen folks posting their concepts for games more times than I can count, but rarely see a developer's name attached to said concepts. So, that brings us to this thread.

Which developers would make up your "dream team"? They wouldn't necessarily have to bring one of your ideas to life either, just a partnership of developers (entire studios teaming up, individuals from multiple studios brought together, etc.) that you would love to see a game from. If you feel like being specific: writers, artists, composers, directors, etc., working in what genre, perhaps even platform?

I haven't actually decided on mine yet, so wow me in the meantime with your own. :P

A lot of the developers I'd want to see doing one thing I'd also want to be staying away from another. And some of the developers don't exist anymore.

"Pre-2010 Bioware" and Obsidian or Black Isle on the story and quest design but nothing else.
Bethesda, Rockstar and Volition on world design with minimal input on the story and gameplay.
Ion Storm on the gameplay elements and level design
Ken Levine and id software helping with everything
A heavily staffed department dedicated to solving the many disputes between development teams that would arise
The largest group of playtesters in videogame history
And published by whoever wouldn't include any DRM.

Levine should just be attached to every project. He seems incredibly flexible in his approach to game design would most likely be quite the asset to any developer/genre.

Hmm... let me think, how a bout.... Bethesda and.... Bethesda!
There really aren't many developers that I would like to team up though. They all make unique games (well, some of them, anyways) and have their own style, merging that with another dev's style would potentially damage that games reputation, and I may not like it, since obviously my opinion is the most important.

Square Enix and Atlus. Just imagine, Square's storytelling and graphics ability mixed with Atlus's competence at making an actual game would make for a pretty awesome product.

To be fair, Square's done a pretty good job on handhelds. XIII is probably their first game in a while that's really dropped the ball in terms of gameplay. Despite my distaste for XII's story, they absolutely nailed what I'd expect from a modern JRPG's level design (assuming we're ruling out the traditional worldmap). I'm not sure what to call XIV though, because it had a lot going for it. A handful of things needed tweaking, but a good deal of it was just the design clashing with a post-World of Warcraft MMO market. Still a pretty big disappointment.

Square and Atlus would be amazing though, especially in the music department. Some sort of massive collaboration between Uematsu, Shoji Meguro, Yoko Shimomura (who, despite working with Square on Kingdom Hearts/Legend of Mana, composed her best work for Atlus' Radiant Historia IMO), and Yasunori Mitsuda. Some very different styles there, but still neat sounding.

Irrational and Bethesda to do an open-world RPG. I would pre-order without even knowing the title.

Let's see, finally put mine together:

Director
: Hironobu Sakaguchi
Producer: Tetsuya Takahashi
Designer: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tetsuya Takahashi, Yasumi Matsuno
Writer: Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yasumi Matsuno
Artist: Akihiko Yoshida, Amano
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda

Basically, I'd piece together Squaresoft, excluding a few key people. :P I'd love to see what these gentlemen could come up with now that Sakaguchi and Takahashi have been doing their own thing for a few years, bringing with them Matsuno of course (without having to deal with Imperial Hot).

Bethesda, Bungie, Epic, Pandemic, BioWare, DICE, Naughty Dog, and Square Enix.

As long as it was either an RPG, shooter, or sandbox I'd buy it.

Add Hamauzu for soundtrack purposes and I'd be so sold on this.

Bethesda Game Studios and id Software, with myself on writing/design supported by some of the Obsidian guys, and some of Square Enix's artists to help out with character (esp. hair) design. Uematsu/Soule on the soundtrack. :D
