So I decided to give EVE Online a try...

Post » Thu Jun 30, 2011 1:58 am

As the topic insinuates, I'm trying EVE Online and I'm completely, 100%, lost. This is something of a problem due to the fact that my ship is now flying in a straight line and I'm not sure how to even turn.

Does anyone play this game? And if so, could anyone give some pointers?

Thanks!

You don't move the ship. You just tell it where to go and it does it on it's own. All I can really say is follow the tutorial, and get into a friendly CORP.

That said, I do think the comparison to EVE and a Spreadsheet program is quite accurate at times, so it can be confusing/boring for many.

And how exactly do you tell it where to go?...

You either click/right click on the screen and it'll open a menu where you can travel to "space ports", asteroid belts, warp gates, etc. You can also open your journal and find your mission location in the details, track the destination and turn on auto pilot.

I was into the game for a short amount of time myself, but I personally dislike the whole permadeath of ships, so I gave up.

Why not just play World of Warcraft if you want something online.
Start a trial and buy full game for £2.99 which is less than what you spend on a takeaway and you get 1 month and 10 days. Even if you enter the key right after trial you still keep free 10 days. Quite a lot of time for £2.99 and you can always quit after that :P

This may be a bad time to start the game, I don't play myself but I do follow its politics and I believe that a large segment of the playerbase is currently involved in what amounts to an uprising against the developers over some extremely controversial microtransactions recently implemented (and future plans for the same).

People have been jumping ship in droves, you might want to hold off for a few weeks and see if the game is going to live.

How many times did you play through the tutorial? I played it about 5-6 times back when I started. You may have autopilot engaged or something.

But now isn't the best time to start the game, most of the players are rioting because of the microtransaction thing. An alternative could be Black Prophecy, it's a free mmo rpg, but clearly inspired by EVE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJOYleqqcHM Also you can actually view the inside of the bridge as you fly

It really is spreadsheets in space. It could probably be played with the graphics turned off, leaving just the various information windows open. Despite the tutorial it's very beginner unfriendly, but there's a rookie channel for newbies to help with any questions. There are even YouTube tutorial videos for the tutorial itself

Just be careful that someone doesn't place a hit on you. Yes, people actually place hits in EVE to steal your loot. Read about it here:

Well in answer to your question of making your ship stop moving forward in a straight line, have you tried right clicking on your ship and bringing up a menu that way? perhaps it has the option to stop there.

I tried the game a month back and frankly i wasn't impressed, i'm still waiting for a space game where i can design and put together my own ship, walk around inside it, be able to look out of the space windows, hire and actually need a crew to make my ship move if its large, explore and find new planets, land on them, walk around cities on said planets seeing weird alien cultures, and being able deliver 20.000 tons of water to the cactus people of desertron IV, as far as space games go it seems none of that is yet possible, elite frontier was the last satisfying space game i ever played, it's been close to 20 years and i'm still waiting for the next one. :(

I'd say stop playing it now mate. I gave it a go a couple of years back and it was sort of fun, but not £10+ a month worth of fun.

I also tried it recently and it's alright and I can see it becoming fun once your in a corp or alliance and involved in the politics or the game. It just seems a very long haul to reach that stage.
