Best is debatable, best performance overall? Or best performance to price ratio? What price range are you looking at?

The question isn't can you afford it, it's can you afford not to have triple 640 GB SSD's.

DO NOT BUY ALIENWARE. They're overpriced for what you get.

You'll regret that decision the second you look at wrong!

I also love how on Aleinware's website they always put the most expensive option as "Alienware recommended". Dell's really helped them with subtlety.

For gaming, I always suggest building or buying a good desktop, then buying a weaker laptop for school/work. Its what I did and it works perfectly.

Edit- Also I just customized a laptop and accessories for just under $11,000. Great Deal.....

Is this just a theoretical S's&G's situation or are you actually planning on buying something? If you are actually seriously looking at laptops you need to give a lot more information to use before we can start to give you any kind of recommendations.

Do you actually travel a lot? As in, multiple business trips a month, or constantly moving from home to home? If not, I would seriously recommend buying a gaming desktop, and a regular laptop for whatever other computing needs you have.

For ~$850 you can get yourself a nice gaming desktop, and then spend $200-500 on a netbook/laptop and you'll be set.

EDIT: Ah, I see your post above. Well if it's just a road trip... I still wouldn't recommend shelling out a ton of cash just so you can play some games during a road trip.

If money isn't a factor go with Alienware. I remember a sweet looking Asus laptop for under a $1000 that was pretty powerful.

Well then I'd wait to see if you get the job or not. And even then, unless your business trips consist of plane flights/bus rides that take hours or days, with multiple layovers, and you'll be spending numerous days away from home, I personally still wouldn't pay for one.

Now, if you're loaded and don't have anything else more important to drop the money on, then sure, why not. But I don't think the performance you get is worth the price you'll pay.

Hell, you could also get a (3)DS/PSP and game on those, and for a [censored] ton cheaper.

EDIT: Or even a handheld AND a basic netbook/laptop both, and it'll still be cheaper than a "gaming" laptop.

For that price range I'd take a look at the Sager NP8130. It is, supposedly, a very well built machine and it is a great value.

If it's a gaming laptop, chance are the battery will die depending on how long you're on the road without a charge.

If money isn't a factor go with Alienware. I remember a sweet looking Asus laptop for under a $1000 that was pretty powerful.

Unless you're filthy rich, money is always a factor.

Don't get an Alienware.

I agree with those who said build a desktop if you can, but if you're in a situation like I am and a laptop works a lot better, I'd say go with Asus. I'm on a G73, but the http://www.excaliberpc.com/607356/asus-g74sx-a1-17.3-notebook.html, and is significantly cheaper than a similar Alienware.
