...as to the question...well...for one thing, they aren't actually immune to radiation, only highly resistant. And perhaps with less predation & lotsa food, they grew big and strong. :whistling:

It is a myth that roaches aren't affected by radiation. So just like other animals it could have affected them. Most bugs tend to be immune to smaller amounts of radiation including roaches, but vast amounts will kill them or in Fallout make them grow.

I think, over time the radiation slowly mutates them through generations along with http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Forced_Evolutionary_Virus in the wasteland makes them grow bigger, like Lady Crimson said: They're not immune, just resistant. Scorpions are also resistant to radiation, but they grew pretty big too.

Radiation isn't the main cause of the mutations of the wasteland, it was the mFEV, the FEV from West-Tek that was mutated by the radiation of the Great War when West-Tek was nuked, releasing the mFEV into the atmosphere.

Actually, I think that the reason they didn't get killed by the radiation is because of the mFEV.

Even if that was the reason for giant radroaches, they wouldn't be generating any offsprings...
Maybe they're just a natural evolution much like the most beloved insect of them all: the Cazador.

mFEV is pure SCIENCE and is the plot device for explaining the mutant creatures, humans surviving being shot in the head, and other nonsense.

To add to this point, because mFEV was spread it the air, everything/everyone should be completely immune to it unless they grew up in a vault, which is the the Master had so much trouble finding proper super mutants for his army.

Well, not so much immune as resistant, as people were still mutated, but their minds were corrupted because they could somewhat resist the mutation, to an extent, and it made them impure mutants.

Well, the mFEV has already mutated them, so, in a sense, they were immune, but more akin to getting chickenpox while young so you don't get it when your old.
