So I'm learning how to play the electric guitar, and I just started 3 days ago, but I'm a big Avenged Sevenfold fan, and I came across this video where Synyster Gates (the lead guitarist) holds this really annoying note for a super long time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHN7351tUr8 anyone know how to do this? I just want to do it to piss off my friends XD

That's feedback from a delay pedal, probably. It sounds like he hit an artificial harmonic and then let his pedal do the rest.

alright haha, ill have to look up what those mean, cus right now I only know how to tune my guitar and amp, what the strings and notes are called, and how to play smoke on the water XD

As for the delay pedal, it's just a piece of equipment that you pass your guitar's signal through before it reaches the amp. It causes an echo effect.

Just turn your amp up real loud and stop playing. (warning may cause hearing damage, use at your own risk)

Put the guitar right up close to the amp while it's on at a loud volume. It's not the quite the same thing that Syn does but it's equally annoying.

Turn your amp up loudly, put your guitar near it, and hit an artificial harmonic high on the fretboard. Turn on a delay pedal, and go for full strength delay or reverse delay.

There's definitely a technique to it. Rage Against the Machine's guitarist used to do some pretty interesting things with feedback. I guess it's about experimenting and seeing what sounds come out - but do take care not to hurt your ears!

He's not holding a note for a super long time (see Buddy Guy). He's just rubbing the string directly against the fret. .
Why go to all the trouble of trying to imitate a sound? If you just started playing, you can merely turn your amp to 11 and pretend you are Steve Vai.
