The games that took forever to finish

Post » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:00 am

So there I was, face to face with the face of Hell itself: The Icon of Sin. It's minions on my back, moments from tearing my flesh from it's bones. I held my rocket launcher firmly in hand. I readied myself an I...

...finished Doom 2. That was only a few weeks ago, a thrilling ride of action and adventure through the planes of hell. However, it occurred to me that this was the first time I've ever done this. I've played Doom and Doom 2 a thousand times, but this was the first time I'd ever played them start-to-finish, from the entry of the Hangar to the Icon of Sin. It only took about seventeen years. Well I suppose strictly speaking it only took me thirteen years, given my first computer was in 1997, but the point is that as much as I wanted to it took me a very long time to finish these games.

So I'm wondering, have you ever found yourself finishing a game long after it's release and wondering why you hadn't done it sooner? Have you ever found yourself finishing anything that isn't a game and wondering why you hadn't done it sooner?

Next up: Final Doom...

Not really, the games I don't like at all are games I will never ever even want to complete and all of those that I actually like have been completed in less than a week, if I power play through them that is. Which cannot be said about TES / Fallout games.

My average playthrough of Persona 3 or 4 takes me three weeks to a month or longer to finish. Those games are maddeningly long.

Still working on Oblivion. So boring that I uninstalled it off my hard drive. Still debating a re-install.

Homeworld, Cataclysm and Homeworld 2. Those games are actually difficult, and since you keep the resources and fleet you're left with it's possible to screw up so bad you need to start from the beginning.

I've started a game and not finished the playthrough until days/months/years later. However, it's no mystery why in any of the cases.

It took me 7 years to complete GTA3. I got stuck on one of the missions and gave up. Then i started playing the other GTAs. I completed GTA3 a couple of months before the release of GTA4.

Quake 4 certainly felt like it took forever: getting to the end of that was a feat of endurance. Anything that makes Doom 3 seem an interesting and exciting jaunt through the imagination is impressive, albeit not for the best reasons.

Borderlands. I felt like a kid in a car "are we there yet" x 1000, Bioshock 2 aswell. I felt I neededto finish them, but they never got better.

Fallout 3, I did all the quests but still didnt do everything after a year or so.
Oblivion, I got bored and thought "wait why am I doing this, its all copy pasted anyway".

Fallout 3 took me about a month because I was stuck with work and whatnot. The Simpsons: Hit and Run took me...well, I still haven't completed it. It took 5 years to get to the final level, and when I got there, I couldn't do it.
