Graphical Glitches after ~5-10 minutes of (exterior) gamepla

Post » Wed Jul 06, 2011 1:47 pm

Essentially I'm not entirely sure as to whether this should be in PC hardware or here, but I'll post it here because I'm fairly certain I can rule out hardware problems (although if anyone has anything more for me to check about my hardware I'm all ears). The problem is that after a given amount of time roaming the Mojave desert (ie, outside), I start to get weird glitches with all manner of things - initially textures on guns will show up weirdly, or some guns display as a missing mesh, then the glitch 'progresses' and more things start to go wrong, such as weapon firing sounds not working, textures not appearing at all, or even laser rifle shots (and/or impact decals) appearing as missing mesh symbols, and eventually I can't save or interact with anyone (well I can save, it just doesn't make a save - infact, when I tried to quicksave once, it removed the last quicksave I'd made but didn't make a new one). Usually the glitches happen sooner if I'm heavily involved in combat, or other NPCs are in the vicinity, although sometimes it just seems to happen automatically. And its only the Mojave exterior that seems to matter - just spent ~7 hours or so completing Dead Money, and I haven't had a single problem, be it a glitch or a crash.

Now given that it appears to just be graphical (and the odd sound) glitch, my first instinct was a RAM related issue, but even with the 4gb NV patch (which in all honesty I only installed after I started having the glitches) I still get the problem. I played in windowed with Task Manager over the top, and the glitches were happening even at 1.1/1.2gb of RAM usage so I doubt its that. Similarly hardware temps for GPU and CPU never once ran over 50 degrees, and so I doubt its that.

Which leaves me completely stumped as to what is causing the problem. Admittedly I'm running a lot of mods, but I've never seen anything like it... Anyone please have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

PS I've tried making a new character, same problem.

It sounds like a hardware problem. My first guess would be bad RAM. http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/ (torture test) and http://www.memtest.org/ would be the software to use to test.

It would be impressive if a mod could cause those problems.

You have too many plugins, probably. Even though 255 is the theoretical limit, the practical limit is much less, and varies depending on your computer. Some people get around it by merging clothing mods, etc.

Woops. Thank you very much for you help about memory though, I'll run the memtester overnight and see what it says.

i have the same problem anytime i put more mods in, once i take a couple out it runs better, it definitely sounds like you have too many mods in, uncheck a bunch and play test, if it works then just remove a few you can play without until it runs (if that is the problem) :) good luck.

EDIT: this one time i was playing, and my gun mesh messed up, then i walked into primm (just to test the current mod before removing some) and i saw a couple of 's (from vanilla meshes) then the sheriffs eyes were completely purple XD lol, i will admit he was kinda scary.

also, the same thing happened with my quicksave, after i tested the mod i quick saved to uncheck mods, and when i loaded it up i lost my previous quicksave, so i think that is your problem, and when i removed a couple of mods my game was good again.

so no need to worry, unless this doesnt work =p.

EDIT2: i dont know if the size of the mod counts (i would assume but i dont want to say for sure since i have no clue) but you seem to have a lot of large mods in also.

Shadowborn Demon,

joshuaw34 is right. It isn't your computer (at least, the hardware) but your total mod count. From the look of that list, around 150? And you use NVSE? New Vegas running in Win7 64 with NVSE can only support about 150 mods being loaded before those problems arise. I don't believe it is the actual content of the mods that count (though I'm not sure if 160 completely empty .esp's would trigger the reaction) because I used http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=39655 and FNVedit to bring my game from 195 mods and the issues you're describing, to 150 and now have no problem at all. Interestingly, the critical number of mods it takes, N_crit, to trigger this behavior, is dependent on which version of NVSE you use. I found 2b5 allowed for the most (153 iirc) while 1b10 the least (150?).

I talked to ianpat, the NVSE curator, about this and he doesn't believe its actually an NVSE issue but the 32 bit FNV executable managing memory in a 64 bit environment, using Win7's bloated (compared to XP Pro) memory manager. I assume because NVSE uses memory hooks it is occupying some amount of the allocated memory for FNV, which is why N_crit varies with NVSE version.

It svcks, but you'll have to spend some time in FNVedit / Plugin Merge to keep all your mods and have your game stabilize. I found Plugin Merge was good for the simple GMST game-rule type merges, and non-conflicting item edits, but you have to sweat a little with FNVedit to merge more complicated things.
